I don't understand why taekwondo is ranked so low. It has a low amount of athletes and so many countries that can win. Gabon, Afghanistan etc. Its a universal sport.

I feel you've got the list a bit wrong.

Gymnastics could be split up in to Rhythmic, Artistic and Trampoline, but it's optional. 'Aquatics' really must be split up - Water Polo in the same grouping as Diving, Swimming, and Synchronised Swimming is insane.

Cane/Kayak Sprint and Slalom should be split, they're two very different sports. You could make a similar argument for the various types of Cycling, although perhaps less effectively, and for Volleyball and Beach Volleyball. 'Athletics' is a cohesive unit only because it is a cohesive unit - other than having shared a governing body for decades, there isn't too much uniting Race Walking with Shotput, or the 400m hurdles.

No I don't.

There are 28 sports at the Olympic Games. A sport is described by the IOC as an entity that is governed by one governing body. Aquatics is the sport, Swimming, Diving, Water Polo and Synchronized Swimming are disciplines of the sport. The discussions within the IOC are at the sport level right now. So it is the 28 sports that are to be ranked, not the 42 disciplines.
