Of course it is going back to the ultra traditional *wallpaper* style look of the Games, however, after seeing the workings of the controversial logo with the whole Sochi park design from London, I think I can see how it could be quite a workable look and logo.

There is something about Sochi 2014's "look" that reminds me quite a lot of Atlanta 1996's Southern patchwork quilt theme of leaves.

I think at two years out, its a nice look and will no doubt mature, could be quite busy/intricate like vancouver, ie looks amazing in person and stills but with motion is a bit blurry.

I guess it will depend at what scale they choose to brand venues with the look. If they really zoom in on snippets and strips and alternate the strips/colours at alternate seating tiers I think it could look good. But I also share Baron's fears that the sochi look might be too much if applied in the venues less carefully.

What will also be interesting is how they use the wordmark in their venue strip branding as we have not seen it on one line only the two lined version.

That's a whole lotta pattern going on.... I hope they've got some plain fields of color to help balance it out or it will be overpowering. Total contrast to London. I like the Russian influence and I see the parallel to Atlanta, but this is definitely different. Need to see more before making a judgment....

It will be better if the proportions of each color aren't exactly the same. I'd like to see 2/3rds cool colors 1/3 hot....

"...unforgettable, dream Games..."

I agree on the color proportions and maybe varied scales of cropping and zooming

I realize my biggest qualm about London's is how seemingly generic it is, but Sochi's just goes overboard. Way too much pattern, screams "R U S S I A" way too loud. Even if you crop 1/10th of one of those banners and put it on a perimeter fence, it would still be too much I think. At least Vancouver's showed restrained with a very focused color palette.

We'll see if things get altered, develop, and/or evolve.

While I have no problem with the design screaming "Russia" (I mean this IS the first Russian Winter Games), the patterns are indeed too intense.
Would rather wipe my ass with $35 than use it to buy your book. At least I could clean it and use it again later.

They can put some balance in it with white gaps for the olympic rings and wordmarks, similar to what Beijing did. You can see some 'white diamonds' in their official site.
"Oh, And the rain tossed about us, in the garden of the world, But a flame arrives to guide us, cast in gold between the anvils of the stars. Watch you over all your children in the rain, and the streets where I remember, Where the fire lights are candle souls again. Affirming flame, hear me call. Through the darkness, hear it call to us all. And stir again. This beating heart, come to care.
Oh, And the light drive out our fears, And the joy drive out our pain, And the nations come to greet us, waving open arms like waves of golden corn. Ever hear us, oh the spirit; of the world. May your light be ever near us, Always lead us from the dark, though we may fall. We will fly. And with love, ever call."
