Whenever they want. They could go after 2024 if they really wanted to. But needless to say the odds of them getting it again until we're all very old and gray is pretty slim. They waited 64 years for this one, it could be that long before they get another.

Are you another troll from Glasgow? Seriously? Quaker just answered your question right above.

Ditto. I mean, London is in the middle of hosting an Olympics RIGHT NOW! And you're already asking when they might go at it again? Crazy talk!

Probably not again in our lifetimes.

The only chance Britain would have had at having Olympics in a shorter gap, would be if Birmingham had won its 1992 bid, and London put forward a successful bid for 2024 or 2028 (which would have been very possible, when you consider the who-ha expectancy of a lesser city like Madrid).

To be fair, this is not unprecedented. Remember, the not only did the US shock the world by getting the 1996 Olympics off the back of 1984 - but they were awarded the 2002 Winter Olympics in 1995 while still organising 1996. IIRC this the only time (aside from the days of synchronised hosting in 1932/36) when a nation has organised two different Olympics at the same time.

Has any other nation ever got close to doing this side from the US with 1996/2002?

All I can think of is Paris 1992 and Albertville 1992. Could they have really both happened?

SLC still won by a huge margin, to the Swedish candidate which was well below. 2002 was always going to be displeasing. Ostersund really would have just been a third candle on the Albertville/Lillehammer eurocake, Lillehammer: the sequal, eight years later; and Quebec City, despite being cultural lightyears away from Calgary, still would have been Canada organising a third Olympics within 7 years of the last... Salt Lake City was OK, and if anything they redeemed themselves with impeccable organisation (flawless compared to Atlanta), and it paved the way for the exceptional Vancouver 2010.
