Notes from the North

As I began the overnight coach journey from London to here in Glasgow, it hit me. It really is going to happen - the greatest sporting spectacle on this planet will take place in my country. To see the Olympic road markings on the roads in the capital and the banners up here and in Newcastle, one of the other football host cities, was the most physical representation yet that something 10 years in the making is now within touching distance.

Like many, my appetite was whetted when I saw the torch relay pass through my area, three weeks ago in my case. But unless you've supported the idea of the London Olympics from the beginning, as I know my fellow British members here have, I think it's been the torch relay that has really brought the country together and got people excited for the Games to come. In Norfolk, where I'm based, people turned out in their thousands and it was a privilege to see and describe the response of the public.

Of course there have been issues. But, having seen the Olympic operation for myself here in Glasgow today, and bear in mind that this is being taken very seriously as a dry run for their Commonwealth Games here in two years' time, I'm in no doubt that we are ready to welcome the world.

All being well, I will watch tomorrow's opening ceremony, or at least most of it, at home and, as I do so, I'm sure there will be a lot of different emotions in my mind. The anticipation of what is to come, a sadness for people I wish could be here to be part of it. But, above all, there will be a lot of pride in my country and hope that the world enjoys the Games. Welcome to Britain, people, and have a ball.
We are the willing
Led by the unknowing
Doing the impossible
For the ungrateful

Waking up at 5:15am on Saturday my time to watch the opening ceremony was just plain awesome! Jumped out of bed got some Tim tams (unhealthy i know) got my blanket and laptop and joined in the chat on here. Had heaps of fun chatting and posting thoughts with other experts. It was my first Olympic ceremony on here and definitely loved it. Time difference is hard missing out on most events but always catch the summaries in past days and have the official apps. Been waking up at 4:30am for past 2 days to catch the swimming and saw Emily Seebohm and Bronte Barrett win medals which was very enjoyable. Also got to get creeped out by Yannick Agnel's face :P
Can't wait to watch more swimming and athletics!

Some pics of my Olympic experience. The park is simply breathtaking with perfect orgsanisation. We didn't have to queue for a train once.

I plan to be in London from Friday to Sunday. Plan is to go to handball, gymnastics, athletics and Closing ceremony.

Haven't been at the Olympics since Torino, so I am quite excited. I hope I find good pizzas there.

hektor - the best pizza near to the Olympics is in the World Food Court in Westfield Stratford. Go to Franco Manca there - sourdough crust pizza cooked in a proper wood oven with real buffalo mozzarella and San Marzano tomatoes. Mmmmmmm!
