2018 Winter Games chief quits; ex minister set to step in

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — A former South Korean government minister was nominated to take over the organizing committee of the 2018 Winter Olympics on Tuesday, just hours after Cho Yang-ho quit amid escalating financial troubles at the business group his family controls.

Lee Hee-beom, a former minister of industry and energy, needs to be ratified by a vote of senior committee officials to officially become president of the organizing committee for the Pyeongchang Games.

Cho's sudden resignation marked the second change in less than two years at the helm of the local organizing committee, which had struggled to get preparations back on track in the face of venue construction delays, disputes over the location of the Olympic stadium and slow pace of domestic sponsorship.

Cho is chairman of the Hanjin Group, which controls Olympic sponsor Korean Air and a major shipping company struggling with heavy debt.

PyeongChang Olympic organizers launch volunteer recruitment program

SEOUL, June 30 (Yonhap) -- Organizers of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games on Thursday announced the start of their volunteer recruit campaign, hoping to bring on more than 22,000 people from around the world to serve as "the face of the Olympics."

The PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG) said it will receive applications online through the end of September. Candidates must be at least 18 years old at the opening of the PyeongChang Olympics on Feb. 9, 2018, and organizations with 50 or more members may apply in the group category. The application site (vol.PyeongChang2018.com) will go live Friday, and group applications may be submitted by email at volunteer@pyeongchang2018.com.

They must be available for at least three weeks for the Olympics and/or two weeks for the Paralympics.

At the ceremony marking the launching of the recruitment program, Lee Hee-beom, head of the POCOG, said volunteers will play a critical role in making the first Winter Olympics in South Korea a success.

"Volunteers stand at the front line of service to every visitor and guest of the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Games, be it athletes, officials, the International Olympic Committee members or spectators," Lee said. "And volunteers' performance will help define the image of PyeongChang 2018. If seeds of volunteerism were sown at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics and the 2002 FIFA World Cup, then these seeds will bear fruit at the PyeongChang Olympics."

Volunteers at the PyeongChang Games will be assigned to different venues to provide service in seven areas -- games information, operational support, media support, technology, protocol/language service, and sport and medical services.

Selected applications will go through field training sessions and classes. Uniforms, accommodation, meals, transportation and insurance coverage will be provided.

Curling and ski jumping are the only two sports which will begin before the opening ceremony.

Mixed doubles will start before the team events and will be in a round robin, which gives us the reason why the IOC only allowed 8 teams (as there would be literally no more room on the schedule, otherwise there would need to be a second venue). Hopefully in 2022 we see 16 teams in a straight knockout format.

The hockey competitions are cut down from 13 to 11 days... not sure if this is behind the scenes talk with the NHL?

More to follow potentially...

Figure skating events at Pyeongchang 2018 to be held in morning to suit American televison

Figure skating finals at the 2018 Winter Olympic Games in Pyeongchang are set to be held in the morning session to suit television audiences in the United States, it has been revealed.

A statement from the Pyeongchang 2018 confirmed the Kyodo News reports that figure skating, a sport which is usually staged in the evening, would start early during the Games in the South Korean resort.

Pyeongchang, located around 130 kilometres from Seoul, is currently 14 hours ahead of New York, which would mean competitions held in the morning would fit in with evening television schedules in the US.

It comes due to the large influence of American broadcaster NBC, which paid sum of $7.65 billion (£6.1 billion/€7 billion) to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for exclusive rights to broadcast all Summer and Winter Olympics until 2032.

According to the draft schedule of events at the 2018 Winter Olympics, the first-ever edition of the event to take place in South Korea, figure skating would start at 10am local time and conclude at 2pm.

The men's short programme gets the sport underway at the Games on February 16, with the free skate scheduled for the following day.

The women's short programme then comes to the fore on February 21, two days before the free skate.

"The IOC and International Sports Federations are currently in talks about the competition schedules," Pyeongchang 2018 said.

"At present figure skating is assigned to the morning session, and if it is deemed alright, the current schedule is likely to go ahead."

Snowboarding is also reportedly likely to take place earlier in the day to appease the American viewers.

It is not the first time sports have been moved to accommodate television audiences as the swimming finals at the Beijing 2008 were brought forward to the morning so American fans could see star performer Michael Phelps go for gold.

At this pace, Park is going to join Dilma in the club of presidents who got kicked out of office shortly before their Olympics. Her popularity is nearing 0% after very serious evidence of nepotism has been found, alongside other controversial things like trying to whitewash her father's reputation (the infamous dictator Park Chung Hee who helped bring on the S.Korean economic miracle but also was a bloodthirsty dictator)

Park Gyeun He is now officially facing an Impeachment after they got 30 more votes than needed in the Korean parliament. The PM will be taking over the presidency these next 6 months and unlike Brazil looks like the opossition to her is much larger so I guess it's safe to assume we won't be seeing her in Pyeongchang.

Hwang Kyo Ahn is the interim president (and possible next president if Park is kicked out and he has to finish the rest of her term)

Olympic Winter Games 2018  Competition Schedule Announced

Olympic Winter Games 2018
Competition Schedule Announced

On your marks, get set, go to PyeongChang 2018!

Olympic Winter Games 2018 Competition Schedule

#PyeongChang2018

https://www.pyeongchang2018.com/en/index

PyeongChang, September 14 – The competition schedule* for the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018 was launched today on the PyeongChang 2018 website with less than 150 days to go until the world’s best winter sports action kicks off.

LEE Hee-Beom, President of the PyeongChang Organizing Committee for the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games (POCOG)  said, “The countdown to the Olympic Winter Games continues, and now with the launch of the competition schedule, the excitement and anticipation for everyone involved is really building.

“Spectators can now see which sports will take place on which day, and the specific timing of the session. This will help in the planning of their Olympic journey and give them the opportunity to buy tickets for a range of sports in one day to make the most of their visit to PyeongChang 2018.”

There are six new medal events for the Olympic Games PyeongChang 2018 – Snowboard Big Air (M/W), Speed Skating Mass Start (M/W), Curling Mixed Doubles and the Alpine Team Event. This takes the total of gold medal events to 102 – making it the largest number of events ever contested at an Olympic Winter Games to date.

The process of compiling the schedule for all seven sports and 15 disciplines began back in 2013 in collaboration with the International Olympic Committee (IOC), all seven International Federations, and Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS).

All of the Short Track Speed Skating sessions will be held in the evening as will most of the Speed Skating sessions, along with the outdoor events of Luge, Ski Jumping and Biathlon which will look spectacular under the lights.

In contrast, the Alpine Skiing competitions will all be held in the daytime, allowing spectators to take in several Olympic activities in one day.

Alpine Skiing is being held across two venues for PyeongChang 2018 – Jeongseong Alpine Centre for the Speed events namely Downhill, Super G and Alpine Combined; and Yongpyong Alpine Centre for the technical events of Giant Slalom, Slalom and Team Event. This allows for the competitions to run on alternate days instead of one after the other that has been the case at previous Games.

To accommodate the packed and exhilarating schedule on both snow and ice, the competitions for Mixed Doubles Curling and Ski Jumping will begin on the 8th February – one day before the Opening Ceremony. Figure Skating, Curling, and Freestyle Skiing will take place on the day of the Opening Ceremony, which will make for a great day out for those looking to see some sporting action before heading to the PyeongChang Olympic Stadium for the official opening.

As Figure Skating shares a competition venue with Short Track Speed Skating, their team events that will be held on the opening day, and the Gala Exhibition will take place in the morning of the Games closing - 25th February. Another hotly sought after session – the Ice Hockey Men’s Final- will also take place on the last day of competition, along with Curling and Cross-Country Skiing to serve as the perfect finale to the Games.

The honor of receiving the first and last medals of the Games will go to athletes from Cross-Country Skiing late afternoon on Day 2 and late afternoon of Day 16. Commonly referred to as a ‘marathon on snow’ it is apt that the competition runs from opening to closing of the Winter Games.

Competition event ticket holders will have access to the free Games public transport system and also get free access to the Olympic Park and Olympic Plaza where they can spend a full day out to experience a wide range of cultural activities, try new sports, see the Olympic Flame burning in the cauldron, watch live coverage of the Games and concerts at the live sites, and enjoy so much more!
