They have a great city centre, but what about the outer districts of Baku?

Rio had this "we'll be the first city in South America to host the games" which mustn't be underrated. And the problem of Baku is: You see those oil fields when you get into the city and from the overnment there's not a peep they would remove them (Not so Rio 2016...). But apart from that, if Rome drops out, they may be shortlisted.

munichfan, we are the Land of Fire and oil exploration in Baku has started much earlier than in anywhere else in the world. In fact the picture you showed is the oldest oil field in the Earth called Bibi-Heybat. That area was proposed for Baku bid 2016. Nowadays the government changed its plans. The are of Bibi-Heybat will be transformed into a big Oil Museum which project is done by Anomorphosis Architects from Greece. Here you can find the plan of the future museum http://www.skyscrape...d.php?t=1055467

Azerbajian probably won't get it. Even with their oil wealth, you still need a largely populated country to support a SUmmer Olympic Games. Perfect example is Greece, with a little less than 11 million people. As we have seen, the long-range effects of those Games in a small country are detrimental. And Azerbajian with less than 9 million, will be a similar outcome. You need the numbers to buy the mascots, and the merchandise; and to man the venues, etc., etc.
