Thanks Frank!

And welcome everybody to Radio City Music Hall in the City That Never Sleeps for the glittering start of the semi-final/shortlist round of the 5th Annual GamesBids Logo Comp Semifinal/Shortlist Round – New York City 2024!

Not to forget the outstanding logos we had for our New Zealand leg of the this year's event, but I think this is THE ONE everybody's been waiting for. We've had an unprecedented number of entries for our bid to brand the Big Apple Olympic games, and I think it's fair to say the standard is higher than ever! I think it's going to be tough for all of us to decide a short list, much less an eventual winner.

But decide we must! I have had the finalist roster posted since the weekend, and have had no late withdrawals, so we will proceed with the list as is. Note that Soaring has nominated a preferred version of his entry be used, which was posted before the cut-off time.
Also, I received before Christmas some supplemental material, a Branding Booklet, from RobH. It can be viewed at: RobH's NYC 2024 Branding Booklet. RobH is also free to post it up in the threads if he so wishes.

Voting rules are:
  • Post your nominations for the shortlist of UP TO FIVE (5) member's logos from the selection above.
  • You may vote for less than five, but if you post more than five selections your post will not be counted.
  • You MAY NOT vote for your own logo.
  • I hate to have special rules for individual members, but I would ask the Afiqnadzir/Aismanggo brothers also not to vote for each other's logos.
  • All selections nominated will be weighted equally - you need not place your preferences in order.
  • You MAY state your reasons for your decision, but try to be respectful please.
  • Voting will last 24 hours. The poll will close after 9am Thursday January 12, Sydney time (10pm January 11 GMT). After this time, the votes will be collated, and the top five logos in terms of votes will proceed to the first elimination poll round.
  • In the event of a tie for fifth (or higher) place, all tied logos will also move on to the elimination rounds.
  • Voting is limited to bona-fide members of GamesBids as of January 1, 2012. The judge's (my) decision on the validity of votes is final.
I will vote in this round.

So I ask everyone to get in a Noo Yawk state of mind, vote for your favourite designs, and wish Good Luck to all entrants.

Overall, better STRONGER designs than Christchurch. I just wish everyone had used the full "2024" and more COLORS than what we see. New York is a vibrant city of ALL THE COLORS of the rainbow!!

And as for my votes:
#2 RobH: Okay, I gotta admit, this has taken me a while to warm to – I think the black threw me a bit at first. The more I look at it, though, the more I like the concept of it. True 3D, and reminds me a lot of Manhattan skyscraper girders. Pardon the pun, but I think this is more than just a dark horse.
#5 Bezzi: An easy choice. Anyone who can come up with something as good as this in Word and MS Paint deserves to get through. And the result aint half bad at all. I was toying with something similar, but using dots to symbolise the lights of Broadway. My execution, however, left a lot to be desired - those who can, do. Those who can't, organise the polls. I hope this goes further!
#12 Daveypodmore: Yes, it is inspired from other sources, but Davey's acknowledged that and come up with what I think is the most “fun” logo of the collection. I could see something like this chosen in real life.
#15 thatsnotmypuppy: Loved it the moment I saw it. Simple, striking, layer upon layer of messaging, and a fantastic catchphrase that works on different levels. Okay, I admit it, this is my favourite.

Those are my fab four. There's honestly half a dozen that could fill in my final fifth slot, and I've tried to consider which one I could pin down, but at the end it would be a coin-toss to decide. So I'll stick with these.

This was a tough one. I really wanted to vote for Bezzi's MS Paint logo because that's what I used and I know how hard it can be to create a logo with that program, but I couldn't find one of my fav 5 to knock off.

Going to have to use up all five of my nominations this time, the quality is great so I'll nominate as many as I'm allowed:

3 - Scotguy
Not completely convinced by the black smudges behind the letters, nor by the 24 randomly plonked underneath, but I like it otherwise. Neon, colourful, definitely American. A brave design I think.

5 - Bezzi
Central Park, the grid layout very NYC, and it's a globe. Says all it needs to. And as Rols said, hugely impressive considering the tools used.

7 - DannyelBrazil
Don't like the choice of font, but the economy of means in this logo is great. A few vertical brush strokes and you get New York AND the Olympics! Reminds me of Martin Creed's London 2012 poster too.

10 - Soaring
I do wonder whether the flame is overkill on this one, but the crown of the Statue of Liberty is easily seen, and it looks like a sun as well which I like. Lovely choice of font too and a really professional execution.

12 - Daveypodmore
It's just so different from everything else. Fun and colourful and witty. Yeah, I like it. Not quite sure how "Olympic" it is and it kind of reminds me of those cutesy ads on TV at the moment encouraging people to get fit. But definitely shortlist worthy.

hmmm, I still can't quite decide, the field is really strong. I would love to vote for more than five.

Tell me about it! I would have voted for at least eight if I could have.
