Olympics-Games watchdog member quits over Dow deal

Jan 26 (Reuters) - A member of the body that oversees the sustainability of the London Olympics has resigned in protest at a sponsorship deal with Dow Chemical because of the American company's ties to the 1984 Bhopal gas disaster that killed thousands in India.
The Games' organisers chose Dow to make the hundreds of plastic panels that will decorate the outside of the main stadium in a contract that has angered many Indians, including current and former Olympic athletes.
Activists say 25,000 people died in the years that followed the gas leak at a pesticides factory in the central Indian city of Bhopal. Dow bought the plant's owner in 1999 and campaigners have demanded that it boosts a 1989 compensation package for those affected by the disaster.
Meredith Alexander, who sat on the Commission for a Sustainable London 2012, said she had decided to quit the independent body because she "didn't want to be party to a defence of Dow".
"People should be free to enjoy London 2012 without this toxic legacy on their conscience", she said in a statement released by rights group Amnesty International, which has supported her cause.
"It is appalling that 27 years on, the site has still not been cleaned up and thousands upon thousands of people are still suffering."
No one at the Olympics organising body could immediately be reached for comment. Dow has denied any responsibility for the accident and says the former owner, Union Carbide, had settled its liabilities with the Indian government.
Amnesty said the Games' organisers should admit they were wrong in awarding the contract to Dow, who are also a worldwide partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
"This high profile resignation means the London 2012 organisers can no longer ignore human rights concerns about Dow, a company that has refused to meet its responsibilities in relation to the victims of Bhopal," Amnesty's Seema Joshi said in a statement.

Dow to remain sponsor of London Olympic Games, says IOC

Unfazed by strong protests in India, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) on Thursday made it clear that Dow Chemicals will remain a sponsor of the London Olympics, insisting the company had no role in the Bhopal gas tragedy. The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has repeatedly expressed opposition to Dow, a sponsor for the London Games, because of its ownership of the former Union Carbide, responsible for the worst industrial disaster in India.
IOA had urged IOC and the London Games Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG) to withdraw Dow as sponsors. However, in a letter to IOA, IOC on Thursday said its relationship with Dow Chemicals is well over 30 years and they were aware of the Bhopal tragedy when discussing the partnership with Dow.
In its letter to IOA acting president Vijay Kumar Malhotra, IOC chief Jacques Rogge said, "IOC recognises that the Bhopal gas tragedy in 1984 was a horrific event for India and the world. The Olympic Movement sympathises with the grief of the victims' families and regrets the ongoing suffering people face in the region."
"IOC and LOCOG were aware of the Bhopal tragedy when discussing the partnership with Dow, which had no connection with the Bhopal tragedy. Dow did not have any ownership stake in Union Carbide until 16 years after the accident and 12 years after the $470 million compensation agreement was approved by the Indian Supreme Court," he said.
"The court has upheld this agreement twice since then, in 1991 and 2007. We understand that this is being reviewed yet a third time by the India Supreme Court and we are aware of Dow's position in this mater, and of the sensitivities of all parties."

How is this ridiculous debate still going on... the Indian olympic Association is only damaging their own reputation... (since their record of medal-winning performances is so esteemed...)

India is planning to intensify its protest against Dow Chemicals' sponsorship of 2012 London Olympics as it mulls boycotting the opening and closing ceremonies of the Games, according to media reports on Wednesday.

India will take the decision on boycott after it gets a clear reply from the organizers about Dow issue.

According to reports, Indian officials will not only skip the opening and closing ceremonies, but will also boycott all official ceremonies related to the event.

However, IOA has confirmed that the athletes will not join the boycott.

I still feel uncomfortable about this, I would Rother they scraped the wrap, any protests at London 2012 ,
Will be a bad thing and should be avoided., and I would be happier sitting inside the stadium myself if none of it was sponsored by Dow

The whole Olympics is sponsored by Dow! They are an IOC tier one sponsor.

You can't give in just to avoid a protest. That would set a very scary precedent. There simply is NO LEGAL MERIT to the Indians argument. The judgements have been held up in their own courts repeatedly. This is baseless. Dow is not responsible.

I wonder if centuries old history adds any fuel to this fire.....

A genuine protest for a genuine grievance I could understand. This just stinks of the Indians trying to take advantage of the Olympics. Well do your worst Indian, boycott if you want, you won't be missed.

A country of 1bn would be missed Lee, bloody hell, this isn't Iran we're talking about!!! If some of their officials boycott though, I won't be too bothered. That would be a protest to the IOC rather than to London, which is what it should be really if they feel strongly.

Assuming the IOC doesn't drop this half billion dollar sponsorship, however, they'll have to be boycotting all Summer and Winter Games up to and including 2020. Be interesting to see how long this drags on...

Nope...I don't think they will be missed that much. They're hardly the greatest sporting nation are they. Incidentally, they got a similar medla tally to that of Iran in Beijing.
