I liked Beginners, but I was underwhelmed by Plummer. I expect him to win anyway, but they'll really be rewarding a body of work rather than that one performance.
My vote goes to Nick Nolte.

Nick Nolte was playing a character that is typecast to his life and some of his other work. While good, it lacked range. My vote would have been to Albert Brooks. Though its nice to see Christopher Plummber win it finally.
Beginners was a flawed film. But it certainly was good and Plummber was the best part.

I saw a couple of films this weekend that I thought were Oscar worthy.
'Martha Marcy May Marlene' - quite full on, but Elizabeth Olsen (Olson?) was simply amazing. I cant imagine the more elderly Oscar voters sitting through it - thus the lack of nominations is not surprising.
'Weekend' - yeah yeah there is a bit of graphic male on male fuckking but its not like you see full penetration. Very well written, utterly believable and a nice little 'slice of life' movie. Some of the dialogue is stuck in my head days later.
I also saw 'The Artist' again (downloaded a dodgy screener - then thought I should see it on the big screen). I appreciate the craftmanship, I appreciate the throwback style, I appreciate the fine performances. However my G-d it is boring. Dull, dull, dull. Not all silent movies were so... pedantic and slow. A missed opportunity but I understand why the critics have came all over their cinema seats.
And yes I watched 'The Tree Of Life' again tonight. Fourth time now. In a just universe it will take home Best Picture, Director and Cinematography. I again am baffled at the lack of editing and visual effects nods - but what can you do.

Don't really agree here. I liked Beginners, but I felt Plummer was the worst part. I didn't see his role as any kind of stretch either.
It's true that Nolte's performance didn't require an accent, handicap, or prosthesis. But he rendered an amazingly full and nuanced character with a great deal of vulnerability and very little screen time.
I didn't get the same emotional nakedness from Plummer. For me he was just sort of ok. The screenplay did most of the work for him and made it pretty easy for Jim to turn in a competent performance.
Nolte has been passed over many times as well, probably most regrettably for Affliction.
I know it's basically a done deal and Plummer will win, but on the basis of these two single performances I felt Nolte was more believable, more emotionally connected and better served the narrative of the film.
Auto-correct! Aargh. Read "him" not "Jim."

Glad Meryl won. Tree of Life was robbed for cinematography. Still think Warrior was wrongly ignored.

Nice parody of Hollywood trailers!!!
I must admit I've been part of the team who produced this video!

GBForums have been boring lately... Miss the good discussions and points. The nice follow-ups on buildings and so on...
Now we have only chat with trolls or weeks without the old good boys posting...
So I'm giving a break, but I'll be back soon. Meanwhile I'll be around in SkyScrapercity, where no trolling and city vs. city is allowed.
