Not a olympian. Plus, football has too much attention in Brazil already and I'm sure other athletes would protest if a football player stole their thunder. Let Ronaldo light the cauldron of the World Cup...Oh Wait!

I hope they make a reference to Pedro Alvares Cabral and D. Pedro

Quite frankly I think Rio will put on a really fun Opening ceremony but let's be real we aren't going to see an awe inspiring opening ceremony like Beijing until an EXTREMLY rich middle eastern country (DOHA) gets the Games if ever they do. Ceremonies like beijing's cost money to produce and no one is shelling out those figures again until an oil rich nation gets the go ahead

What's exactly your point? Lack of money or organization (which is ridiculous for the 6th biggest economy of the world) or a childish prejudice over a "third-world" country?

After all the mess Ronaldo did with Flamengo supporters (about 65% of Rio ppl and Flamengo has the biggest number of supporters nationwide)...
It would be better to (new-paulista) Ronaldo even avoid be in Rio during the games.

People in Brazil really does not care much about Brazil's history or "history heros", indeed, I do think the ceremony will be more about the future of the "once sleeping giant" than about the past, specially the Portuguese part of it.
Sorry about that, but people in Brazil is really not proud about Portuguese heritage, specially due slavery and exploration of natural resources...

We are curious about our history, but not exactly proud of it.

Who told you that Ronaldo was not an olympian?

He played in the national team in 1996 Games in Atlanta and left with a bronze medal. Not only he is an olympic athlete, but also an olympic medalist.

Yeah, A. But NO bronze medalist has been tabbed to light the cauldron. The only silver (the lowest) was Midori Ito in Nagano.

I do think we are much more "better" olympic champions to light the cauldron than Ronaldo.

I don't argue with the fact that Ronaldo mught not be the best choice, but saying he was not an olympic athlete is a big fat lie anyway.

^^ Yeah, he won the bronze medal along with the brazilian football team in Atlanta 96. That makes him technicaly an olympic athlete.

I'm not fluent in Brazillian History but from what I know they should'n be ashamed of it, it's not as proud or significant as English, French or Portuguese History but it should be celebrated as well, even Slavery was important, Brazil would be a totally different country today if it haven't had slavery, the music, culture and brazillian way of being would be completely different.
