I think saying that Canada has no chance against the US is a bridge too far. The time zone and travel distance are both advantageous for American fans and FIFA can still boast about going to a new frontier and all that crap. Not to mention that Canada has a pretty good record with handling FIFA tournaments. I definitively thing the US would have the advantage, but it wouldn't be a walkover.

FIFA can always change its own rules if they appear to be counterproductive. At some point FIFA must understand that devaluating their crown jewel, the World Cup, by taking it to each and every new frontier makes no sense. After Russia and especially Qatar they might realise that it might be better to give the tournament to a traditional European power like England or Spain and not to another footballing backwater like Canada. That's why I wouldn't rule out a return to Western Europe. By 2026 it will be 20 years since Germany's hosting.

Don't be too sure about Canada being a soccer backwater. At least Canada has some World Cup experience ever, unlike Qatar. I know this was 1986 when the US failed to qualify, and the Canadians failed to score a goal in Mexico--teams that don't score a goal there tend not to return for a long time if at all. Different era back then. But there are some rising young players coming up and the organizational skills from Canada ought to be very high. But it would help if Canada got some more World Cup experience, even if it doesn't advance out of group play. More stadiums could be built. Just focus on Canada Soccer getting there, like for Brazil.

Reaching the World Cup would be a good start for Canada. Their cameo appearance in Mexico '86 isn't much more than an anecdote with no goals scored and no points won and owes everything to the fact that Mexico didn't have to participate in the qualifiers and US was still very weak. Even with the US it has taken some time to gain respect in the game after their international reappearance in Italia '90 and the World Cup hosting four years later. Only in this millenia they have got a reputation of being a decent football or soccer nation, whatever you like to call it, this after participating in every World Cup and some other tournaments, some times even progressing from the group stage. Australia is now going through the same process, within its own capabilities, after the relatively succesfull tournaments in 2006 and 2010 but they must stay course and replace the current aging generation.

Still you could never compare Canada or US with the traditions and roots of the old European powers like Germany, England, Italy, etc.

Canada has the capability too, but at least 2-4 more stadiums would be needed.

@Deawebo Turkey would be an excellent choice.
