Well, I guess it's not to early to start a thread on this - it was certainly a popular bit of specualtion ahead of Beijing.

Anyway, Seb has personally given an invite to our Julia:

Prime Minister Gillard invited to London Games

The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, has been invited to attend next year’s London Olympic Games.

The invitation was extended by the Chairman of the London Organising Committee (LOCOG) Lord Sebastian Coe during a meeting with the Prime Minister at Parliament House in Canberra on Wednesday.

Lord Coe along with AOC President John Coates, Greg Hartung, Australian Paralympic Committee President and Federal Sports Minister, Senator Mark Arbib, met with Ms Gillard who complimented London on their preparations for the 2012 Games.

Lord Coe had earlier briefed athletes, business executives and politicians on plans for the London Games at a breakfast where he said he wanted London to have a party atmosphere like Sydney did in 2000.

Fifty Heads of State attended the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Olympics in 2008 including the then Australian PM, Kevin Rudd.

Lord Coe said he would be delighted if Ms Gillard could join him for the Opening Ceremony in London on 27 July 2012.

I actually think this might be a very well attended Opening Ceremony. I would imagine the heads of every EU country and the majority of Commonwealth countries will be in attendance. But it might be hard to match the 100+ that attended Beijing.

Any word on whether Barack Obama will attend? I would assume so although he's going to be in the heat of his re-election campaign.

If not, surely he'll send Michelle and the kids - to make up for missing out on the wedding.

Yes, plus 2012 will be the US' turn as the G8+ host. So while that normally takes place in June, the results of that PLUS the re-election would be Obama's priorities next summer.

It has not yet been decided where the 2012 G8+ will be. Must be a place easy to secure PLUS have hundreds of guest rooms for the world's press. Maybe Minneapolis, Birmingham or Tulsa as sites--so they will finally shut up!!!

The Republicans will have their big pow-wow next year in Tampa, FLA; and the Democrats are meeting in Charlotte, NC.

I was under the impression they weren't invited.

The foreign dignitaries was reserved for Royals, Commonwealth heads of government/state, and non-soverign royals with familial ties with the House of Windsor.
