ESPN and Special Olympics
ESPN is proud of its relationship with Special Olympics, which spans more than 31 years and over the past three years, ESPN has continued to deepen its relationship with the Special Olympics movement.
Earlier this year, ESPN and Special Olympics committed to continuing their alliance to use the power of sports to promote social inclusion and acceptance by reaching two agreements:   an extension, and expansion, of ESPN's Global Presenting Sponsorship of Special Olympics Unified Sports® and a new, three-year global programming agreement.
The new $1.5 million grant supports Special Olympics Unified Sports, as well as other initiatives, and extends and expands a role ESPN has held since 2013. Dedicated to promoting social inclusion through shared sports training and competition experiences, Special Olympics Unified Sports joins people with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team. It was inspired by a simple principle: training together and playing together is a quick path to friendship and understanding. With support from ESPN and others, Special Olympics has  grown this innovative and inclusive program to more than 1.2 million participants. As part of the continued support of Unified Sports, ESPN will invest in Special Olympics' goal to build Unified Sports programming and resources in 10,000 schools by 2020 and ensuring 100,000 coaches receive new/renewed sports certifications by 2020.
ESPN's global Special Olympics programming agreement means ESPN is not only an Official Broadcaster of the 2017 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria, but also the Official Broadcaster of the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle, and the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games. ESPN is also adding more news and feature coverage of other Special Olympics events, athletes and stories over the course of the three-year agreement
ESPN believes that, at its very best, sports uplifts the human spirit. Its corporate citizenship programs use the power of sport to positively address society's most pressing needs through strategic community investments, cause marketing programs, collaboration with sports organizations and employee volunteerism, while also utilizing its diverse media assets. For more information go to www.espn.com/citizenship.

Not a ceremony video but rather about a K-Drama called "Reply 1988" which is a typical slice of life story happening, like the name implies, in 1988 (the year of the Olympics). some of the protagonists get involved in the olympics and they actually did dramatizations of the rehearsals for the Opening.

One of the girls was supossed to be the placard bearer for Madagascar at the opening. And as we all know what they did at last minute...one wouldn't want to be on her place.

Go at minute 26:10 , 42:10, 51:00 , 1:03:00

Back to my longstanding personal cult fave that's Moscow 1980 with the Closing Ceremony at Lenin Stadium on August 3, 1980. What's different here is you see some scenes that weren't in the first uploading we had from several years ago also taken from Soviet TV (still present in YouTube), like the mass trumpters in the beginning, IOC President Lord Killianin coming down the steps before delivering his closing address, to Misha actually seen through binoculars in the sky to the very end with some early 80s era optics. Perhaps this was shown on a different channel on TV CCCP like Moscow Television at the time. I think someone will eventually combine all the footage together and make it more complete. By the way, that Brazilian TV Opening Ceremony coverage from TV Cultura that Gilberto uploaded apparently has since been removed--though the parade of nations is still there. So we don't have the full Moscow 1980 OC again. Hopefully soon we'll get that with better resolution:

It's interesting that we have been able to find quite a bit from Moscow, but nothing from the Lake Placid OC.

This makes me think that the VCR was invented between February and July of 1980 (the difference in the amount of worldwide coverage between the two events might have something to do with it as well).

VCR's hit mainstream in the late 70's. Fortunately they were common enough by late '78 that the Star Wars Christmas Special was recorded and saved by a few people :)

I, too, am disappointed that the Lake Placid OC has not made to youtube.  There used to be a short video (~5 mins) of clips from the Lake Placid OC, taken from ABC's coverage with Jim McKay, on the IOC's official website.  It showed Lord Killanin's speech, Vice-President Mondale's Opening Declaration, and the lighting of the Olympic Flame.  This video later showed up on the Beijing games' official website, but has since disappeared.  I did manage to record the audio from that video.  There is another video on youtube, produced by the State of New York about it's involvement with the Lake Placid games, that shows, at the beginning, Gov. Hugh Carey's remarks at the Lake Placid OC.  You would think someone in New York would have taped the broadcast at the time.

On a related note, there used to be archived webcasts of CBC's coverage of the wonderful Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the 1999 Pan American Games in Winnipeg.  Those, sadly, are long gone too, although I managed to record extensive audio from the webcasts.

I am also disappointed that the complete Indianapolis 1987 Pan American Games Opening Ceremony has not surfaced on youtube.  Again, you would think someone in Indiana would have recorded the broadcast at the time.

Here is an interesting find:

This is a segment from the 1994 Goodwill Games Closing Ceremony in St. Petersburg, Russia.  It features a performance from the Russian singer Marina Kapusto.  This segment was omitted from TBS' tape-delayed broadcast of the ceremony in 1994.  Enjoy!

Here is an interesting find on youtube:  a german phonograph record of the Munich Games.  Side A has audio from the opening ceremony and Side B has audio of the speeches at the memorial service in the Olympic Stadium on September 6.

Also, here is a german documentary in HD about the Munich games that has the best footage of the Closing Ceremony I've ever seen:

And now for something completely different:

This July, I hope to do something vaguely useful with the spreadsheet I've been compiling since 2012 of the videos of London 2012 Opening Ceremony fireworks which turn up, seemingly at random, as "Recommended for You" when I use YouTube (and other online video services). To start the ball rolling, I've put the basic list online, currently only accessible via the following link:

Please let me know if you spot any major goofs or omissions !

One year ago finally someone uploaded the Opening of Latakia 1987 Med Games but sadly it was on a very poor quality. Well, one year later, Gsf Sport in Youtube has uploaded at last a good quality version of this show done by the same producers of Moscow 1980.

I didn't expected hearing a mexican song in the beggining o.O

/\/\  Great find, Ikarus!!  (Those guys standing there for like 10 mins, with nothing happening??)

Too bad the ceremony happened on an overcast day, so the colors of the telecast are so pale and washed-out.  To think that Syria was once a peaceful and prosperous nation; and today half of that country is nothing but mounds of rubble.  Really sad.  :(

Looks like the arrival of Al Assad to the main tribune got delayed longer than planned, hence why they were standing up for 10 minutes. The whole ceremony also had lots of personality cult to Bashar's late father.

There is more of the ceremony, btw, which happened during night so the colors seem a tad better there.

First time seeing it anywhere of the ZDF version for me. Nice to see, if only to see another language broadcast with the special angle here of the last pre-reunification Olympics (Summer and Winter), before the fall of the Berlin Wall, and how was the GDR to be presented and perceived
