Olympic torch relay sponsor's vehicles unveiled

The Olympic torch relay convoy will include a fleet of branded vehicles from the event's presenting sponsors.

Coca-Cola, Samsung and Lloyds will all have modified vehicles travelling ahead of the flame as it tours around the UK from Land's End to Stratford.

They will play music and dish out memorabilia and information to crowds lining the relay route.

The announcement came as doctors warned Olympic sponsorship by fast food companies "sent the wrong message".

The criticism was part of a campaign to tackle rising levels of obesity that is represented by almost every doctor in the UK.

"They clearly wouldn't be spending the money if they didn't benefit from being associated with successful athletes," said a spokesman for the campaign, Prof Terence Stephenson.

Unite the nation?

Defending its contribution Coca-Cola said: "We expect more than 75% of the drinks that we sell at the Olympics and Paralympics will be water, juice or sugar-free.

A van will follow behind the torch relay cavalcade, sweeping the route and collecting waste for recycling.

Coca-Cola hopes its so-called Beat Fleet will encourage crowds to "move to the beat" blasted out by MCs playing music such as the company's official Olympic anthem, Anywhere in the World, performed by producer Mark Ronson and singer Katy B.

James Williams, Coca-Cola's Olympic torch relay director, said the sustainable vehicles would showcase the latest in "green" technology.

"Not only will they help to galvanise nationwide support for all the Future Flames honoured with carrying the Olympic torch, the 'Beat Fleet' will also help to unite the nation allowing everybody to take part in the UK's biggest party," he said.

Royals to welcome Olympic Torch

(UKPA)

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge plus Prince Harry are set to give the Olympic Torch relay a royal welcome when it visits Buckingham Palace on the way to the start of the London 2012 Games.

William, Kate and Harry will be watching as three torchbearers carry the Olympic Flame through the grounds of the royal residence on July 26, the day before the opening ceremony.

The Queen will view the Olympic Flame at Windsor Castle on July 10, Buckingham Palace said.

The Olympic Torch Relay will travel through the grounds of four royal residences on its way to the lighting of the cauldron at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford, east London, to mark the start of the Games.

The Olympic Flame will pass through the Balmoral Estate on June 11, the Sandringham Estate on July 4 and Windsor Castle on July 10, where the Queen will meet the torchbearers.

No members of the Royal Family will be at Sandringham or Balmoral when the torch relay passes by.

It will also head to Buckingham Palace on July 26, where William, Kate and Harry, who are all Team GB and Paralympics GB ambassadors, will be waiting.

In the run-up to the Games they are working to encourage the public to support the sportsmen and women. It is likely they will visit the teams between now and the Games, and also have some involvement in the global competitions.

By the way: Could that be a hint for the lighting method of the cauldron?

Is there any testing still to do?

Clare Pelly: We need to test it being carried by someone on a zip wire - initial tests have gone very well. We're just making sure for safety reasons.

At the end of the article: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-17738920

Interesting... It could be that they want someone carrying it on a zip wire at an earlier stage of the relay, though. But it's interesting nevertheless! ;)

Locog's Rejection Of Ancient Greek Ship

Threatens To Spark Diplomatic Row

London 2012 organisers have sparked a diplomatic row after refusing a gift from the

Greek government - because of health and safety.

trireme_2197267b.jpg

Locogs has decided not to accept a replica of an ancient Hellenic ship which was to be rowed

along the Thames by 170 Londoners whilst transporting the Olympic flame.

The historic ceremony would link the London Games with the Athens Olympics of 2004 where i

was also used. It was Greece's only official contribution to the games.

However according to emails seen by the Financial Times, it's been decided the ceremony should

be scrapped over health and safety fears.

A source close to the discussions told the newspaper that organisers had feared the sight of the

70ft barge would unleash chaos along the Thames with overcrowding and traffic jams. Some

officials even worried that Olympic hysteria would cause spectators to throw themselves onto the

boat.

“It is a risk we are just not able to take at this time" Locogs says in the emails, reported the FT.

The boat is a replica of Olympias, an Athenian trireme that classicists say was used at the

Battle of Salamis in 480 BC. It is heralded as a pioneering example of archaeology and naval

engineering.

Adding to its status, some £150,000 has already been spent refurbishing the ship in preparation

for the Games by the International Advantage Corporation, a US exhibits and entertainment

distributor, the Telegraph has reported.

The Greek defence minister is planning to make a complaint to Boris Johnson, London 2012 boss

Lord Coe, and the UK government following Locog's withdrawal.

Just saw it, it was fab, loads of people came out. There were a lot of police bikes and they were waving at the crowd. There were 2 buses, a transit, a few BMW's, bikes a horse box type truck. Then Samsung in a cool bus, a Coca cola one and a Lloyds bus. It was so cool, people were so happy. Will upload pics later, it was a great warm up for the real thing

I was so impressed. It was so well organised. The thing that struck me was all these people had come out of their homes and work to watch and it wasnt even the proper relay. Everyone was chatting and laughing. People dont smile enough, but today people were smiling big time. Such a fab feeling watching the approaching cars and hearing the sirens. We were at a stop just after a convoy leg, so for the real day I think I will head futher into town to watch it all unfold rather than a stationary start. The police waving made it even more special all those police could have been threatening but it was all so good natured. As we wandered off one of the offcials in the car wound down his window and thanked us for coming out. They seemed really pleased with how it was going. And the map with the route on the back of the buses was a lovely touch.
