Rio 2016™ announces Nissan as automotive sponsor
The Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games has announced that Nissan has become the automotive sponsor of the Rio 2016™ Olympic Games. The carmaker is now the Games’ fifth tier one partner and the sixth domestic sponsor overall.
Nissan’s winning bid delivered a total value in excess of the requirements from Rio 2016™ for the category. “I am very happy with this historical achievement. This partnership demonstrates the value of the Rio 2016™ brand and the strength and attractiveness of the Brazilian consumer market. Against this backdrop and after six months of negotiations that also involved other applicants, Nissan submitted a proposal that ensures a consistent mix of products, services and financial backing, proving to be the ideal automotive partner for the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games”, said the Rio 2016™ President, Carlos Arthur Nuzman.
The deal guarantees the provision of 4,500 vehicles of different models which are required by Rio 2016™ at Games time to transport clients, such as athletes, technical officials, media, operational teams, National Olympic Committees, International Sports Federations, the International Olympic Committee and commercial partners. The Games-time car fleet will prioritise the use of clean energy (ethanol or electricity) supporting Rio 2016™’s efforts to achieve sustainability targets across the Games. Furthermore, a proportion of the fleet will be wheelchair-accessible and vehicle models will include top sedans, medium size sedans and SUVs.
“Nissan is very proud to be a partner of Rio 2016™,” Carlos Ghosn, CEO and President of Nissan, said. “Our multiple connections with Brazil are deep; in 2014 we open a new world-class manufacturing plant in Resende, state of Rio de Janeiro. As a showcase for the energy and vision of Brazil, the Olympic Games are a natural fit for Nissan. We look forward to contributing towards making the Rio 2016™ Games a world-class event for the city, state and country.”
“Counting on a partner that helps us tackle operational challenges in a vital area such as transport and also assists us in delivering accessible and sustainable Games is a privilege Nissan is giving us with this agreement. We are looking forward to starting our collaboration,” stated Leonardo Gryner, the CEO of the Rio 2016™ Organising Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
