TV chief will bring drama to Glasgow's Games

THE TV guru behind hit dramas including Bad Girls, Footballers' Wives and Waterloo Road will oversee the opening and closing ceremonies of the Commonwealth Games, as well as the cultural programme around the event.

Eileen Gallagher will also oversee the baton relay, the Commonwealth Games's equivalent of the Olympic Torch, as it makes its way through all 71 member nations.

Ms Gallagher, whose company Shed became one of the most successful independent production companies in UK broadcasting, was brought onto the 2014 board last year by chairman Lord Smith of Kelvin to strengthen its connections to the broadcasting industry, ahead of the signing of a host broadcaster,

Organisers of Glasgow 2014 said the steering group Ms Gallagher will head will be tasked with setting the tone on all three strands under one "coordinated approach".

The opening ceremony is on July 23, 2014, at Celtic Park. The Games officially get under way when the Queen's baton relay arrives and a message from the monarch is read to athletes.

Glasgow's relay will visit all 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth and travel throughout Scotland.

Glasgow Life, the body which runs Glasgow's museums, libraries and sports facilities, will work on the cultural programme with the organising committee, building on the experience of managing the flag handover ceremony at Delhi 2010.

A worldwide search for a creative team to lead the production of the ceremonies will be launched in the coming weeks.

Ms Gallagher said: "This is an outstanding opportunity to create a cultural programme and opening and closing ceremonies which will live long in the memory.

"While we will look to the world for the best creative talent, we will also be working with both local and national government and other bodies from across Scotland to ensure the ceremonies are truly representative of all the talents this proud nation lays claim to.

"The model for Delhi 2010 was hugely successful and we're confident that the games partners have the experience and passion to deliver a fantastic cultural programme around the games – and spectacular opening and closing ceremonies."

Lord Smith said: "In less than three years, all eyes will be on Glasgow and this is a unique opportunity for us to showcase the city and Scotland to both the Commonwealth and the world.

"In Eileen we have the creative skills, vision and drive to oversee the creation of breathtaking events that will not only generate excitement about Glasgow 2014 at home and abroad but will ensure a memorable experience of the Games and Scotland."

Sport Minister Shona Robison said: "The steering group led by Eileen Gallagher has an important role to play in ensuring the delivery of a memorable cultural programme across the whole of Scotland. This will complement a sporting spectacle that I am sure will be remembered for years to come."

Glasgow 2014 is 'in the hands of professionals'
The Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games will be “fantastic” according to Joan Mills, Technical Delegate from the International Federation of Netball Associations. Alongside Maggie Murray, Chief Executive Officer at Netball Scotland, Joan recently met with the Glasgow 2014 Organising Committee (OC) to discuss the plans and preparations for Netball at the Games.

During a visit to gauge the progress Glasgow 2014 are making in preparation for the Netball competition, they visited the SECC and the site of the Scottish National Arena which will host the preliminary competition, and the medal rounds respectively during the Games in 2014. The visit also offered them the chance to spend time with various key functional areas within the OC.

Netball, one of the Commonwealth Games core sports, is a fast-paced game which showcases the stamina, athleticism and skill of elite women from across the Commonwealth.

Australia and New Zealand have shared gold at the past four Commonwealth Games however England are likely to mount a significant challenge to the Oceanic nations having recently been crowned World Netball Series Champions.

Joan Mills, Technical Delegate, International Federation of Netball Associations said:

“Being in Glasgow and meeting the team who will be taking care of Netball at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games was excellent. The Games are truly in the hands of professionals and I’m confident that they will be absolutely fantastic. As a federation we are looking forward to working with Glasgow 2014 and helping to ensure that these Games are the best they can possibly be.”

Maggie Murray, Chief Executive Officer at Netball Scotland said:

“I’m delighted with the progress which has been made and the positive report which we received from the first Technical Delegate visit. Netball within the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games is in good hands and we are confident that the Glasgow 2014 team have left no room for failure.”

Glasgow 2014 is today launching a global search for the creative talent which will deliver the £14million showcase ceremonies which will provide a dynamic start and finale to the Commonwealth Games.

The Opening and Closing Ceremonies will create landmark moments and will be the largest events of their kind to be delivered in Glasgow and they will be beamed globally to an audience of more than one billion people. In addition, the two Games Ceremonies will provide a welcome economic boost for Scotland's creative sector which will play a key role in bringing the glittering events to life.

The Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the Games also offer a global opportunity to promote Scotland as an outstanding sporting, business and tourist destination, as athletes from 71 nations - more than a third of the planet's population - compete in Glasgow for world-class sporting honours.

A glittering spectacle, the Opening Ceremony will feature highlights including:

• - The arrival of the Head of the Commonwealth
• - The Parade of Nations where Glasgow officially welcomes the Commonwealth Nations to the Games
• - The epic end of the Queen's Baton Relay which will tour every participating nation

Tax break offer to 2014 Commonwealth Games athletes
Athletes from outside the UK who compete in the 2014 Commonwealth Games are to be given an income tax exemption.
The Treasury has decided to grant the incentive to encourage top international competitors to attend the Glasgow event.
Chief Secretary Danny Alexander is expected to confirm the move during a visit to the west of Scotland.
A similar measure has been put in place for the London 2012 Olympics.
Any athlete not normally resident in the UK is subject to UK income tax on any payment for performing in the country.
'Memorable Games'
This can include a proportion of worldwide endorsement income.
The exemption could be particularly valuable to top stars such as sprinter Usain Bolt.
In the draft text of a speech Mr Alexander intends to make during a visit to the Commonwealth Sports Arena and Sir Chris Hoy Velodrome in Glasgow, released to the media, he explained the move.
Mr Alexander said: "With six months tomorrow to go until London 2012, I'm pleased to announce this special exemption for Glasgow 2014 which will prolong the Olympic legacy and help spread the long-term benefits into Scotland.
"Everyone wants to see the best athletes compete at Glasgow 2014 and this exemption will make that more likely."
Shona Robison, the Scottish government minister for Commonwealth Games and sport, said: "I am delighted that an agreement has been reached to exempt international competitors from tax on any income arising from their appearance in the Commonwealth Games.
"We want to deliver a memorable Games which attracts the cream of Commonwealth athletes to Glasgow 2014."

I think it's too early for medal designs etc but here's some more news.

The diving events will be staged at the Commonwealth pool in Edinburgh which has just been refurbished.





Some progress on the new arena (called the Hydro arena) which will host the gymnastics and netball finals.

Here's an update on the National Indoor sports arena. It's actually even more developed than this but this is fairly recent. It will host badminton during the games but as you can perhaps make out, its primary use will be for an indoor athletics arena which will employ a hydraulic floor to raise/lower the 200m running track.
