Looks like that 2010 American mid-term elections present a "clear and present danger" to the Canadian people. There has been talk that the Tea Party's foreign policy (therefore of the Republican Party's really right-wing) includes invading Canada and forcefully annex the country into new states of the larger United States of America by the time around the 2012 American presidential election to the year 2013. Some say you can thank "popular around the world", 2009 Nobel Peace Prize winner Barack Obama for making it happen. Of course, this depends on whether a Republican takes the White House in 2012 and the President of the United States happens to be Sarah Palin or one of her comrades.

Wouldn't it be funny, if Quebec was re-named the state of New Louisiana? Also, the re-naming of all French-named cities, towns, villages, etc. to "evil American English" names? The FLQ, Bloc Quebecois and other Quebec nationalist groups would have a field day doing car bombings, kidnapping and killing Americans, like the way the ETA of the Basques are doing to Spain right now to the Spaniards.

Toronto to become an American city? I'm sure Jack Layton will not like that at all. His party would be considered dead and illegal in the new United States of America, along with the Communist Party of Canada.

The only "province" to gain from an American invasion of Canada would be Alberta. Republicans would really want all that oil and oil sands to fuel their slush and election campaign funds to battle the Democrats for decades to come. Never mind wanting the title of grabbing all the Arctic areas for itself and the natural resources it could bring to the new United States of America.

I think this article, from the Foreign Policy web page, is a joke, but you decide on whether this article is genuine or not: The Top 5 Foreign Policy Initiatives of the Tea Party

Will these people march into Canada as invaders or liberators?

LOL!

Only in America could those crackpot Tea-Partiers survive and grow into a real political force.

Yeah. And Star Trek "history" has Canada still in place while the US becomes no more.

Anyway, I do not want Sarah Palin to be US president. In fact, guess who wants the Republican nomination for US president in 2012? I hope not, too, but Dick Cheney wants to go for it. Both of them would want to invade Canada and want to wage nuclear war upon the world, starting with the Arabs.

In addition to Shatner, the US stole our other Canadian treckers too :P :
James Doohan - Scotty
Bruce Greenwood - Captain Pike (new Trek)
Kim Cattrall (Star Trek 6)
Christopher Plummer (Star Trek 6)

They can keep Justin Beiber and Celine Dion.

this "talking" about an accession of Canada to the United States of America is a kind of "alternative history/politics" fairy tale like

- if Hitler had won WWII

- if West Germany had accessed East Germany

- if the spanish Armada had won in England

- if the 9/11 plot had been revealed and retarded

etc. etc.

I found such fairy tales always interesting since they show how all different events/history and therewith our todays life are linked to each other

Are you sure this shouldn't be titled "Rip United States of America (1776-2013)?"

An invasion of Canada in 2013 would be futile and either end rather quickly with the defeat of the US, or drawn out over years, perhaps even decades.

The reasoning for this is rather simple, in-spite of the disproportionate population (and in that case armed forces) of the two nations (which of course the US is larger), Canada has a number of things going for them, most obvious is the fact that they're a part of the Commonwealth of Nations and most importantly, recognise the Queen at the top.

As such one would expect any existing peace/defensive treaties between the US and UK to become obsolete with the UK declaring war on the US.
Australia and New Zealand might logically follow and break ties with the US, as would much of the Commonwealth for that matter, if not physically supportive, then at least acknowledging their support for the underdog Canada.

The Arab world would be outraged, if it wasn't dealt with first. After all, if one can't be peaceful with their neighbours, how can they be peaceful with people 1000's of miles away.

The UK and it's allies would immediately take over US territories outside of the US wherever possible in an effort to confine the conflict in the Canadian/US region.

Much of Europe will most likely support Canada, but it would be the French who actively send troops, whether it be main forces of elements of the Foreign Legion.

The threat of Nuclear conflict will be null as international law/condemnation would prohibit it, the US should be logical to avoid this even if the war is not going to their favour, Canada lacking nuclear weapons will not be part of such a conflict, nor will their potential allies the UK or France be wanting to use their arsenals (after all they are not the aggressors here).

As such war will be fought conventionally, with regular forces. Much of the civilian population will not be targeted, but like in most conflicts, expect there to be collateral damage of some kind.

The war, should there be one, will effectively end with the US losing against a multi-national task force. Post war, the US will be split up amongst the main "Allies" much like how Germany was post World War II. De-American-Imperialism or whatever will occur. The American citizens will be reeducated with regards to being peaceful with their neighbours. Within 10 or so years, a new America will be formed, with perhaps some forced territory concessions to Canada.

In simple, even though Canada would face overwhelming odds against their world power of a neighbour, the US, it would be much of the world itself that would ally themselves with Canada, whether it be due to historical ties, or if they consider the whole underdog concept. In the end, no matter how long the war is, it's the US' to lose.

Yeah, no kidding. Here's this week's cover story on MacLean's Magazine:
MacLean's: Third world America: Collapsing bridges, street lights turned off, cuts to basic services: the decline of a superpower

American jobs are being lost not only to low-wage competition from emerging economies, but to strategic policies by foreign governments to dominate critical sectors of the economy, or to keep their currency values low to promote exports. “Other countries recognize the importance of economies of scale and promote the development of certain industries, whether solar panels, or semiconductors, and we don’t,” says Prestowitz.

It's quite the story. It's 3 pages long so make sure you hit the "Page 1 2 3" buttons at the bottom.
