The BBC should parody there own TV coverage.

They said London wouldn’t win.

The 2012 organisers got every thing right.

Yet another Pommy rip off from Sydney 2000 :P

Guess 'The Games' set the paradigm for Olympic satires...question is will British broadcasters resurrect Hale & Pace for a 2012 copy of the legendary 'The Dream with Roy & HG'

The fact its got Jessica Hynes in it makes me think it should be pretty good. She was amazing in Spaced.

First thing I thought too! Good to see the story acknowledges it as well.

It augers well IMO that the Brits also seem to be ready to be a bit irreverant with their games.

Well, it's on BBC4 so that is a slightly good sign.
For those not in Britian - BBC Four is widely regarded as a channel of quality programming.

Well let's face it SR, could the Greeks, Chinese and Russians lampoon something that for them constituted or constitutes some kind of national ego massage slash 'look at us' moment. Methinks ourselves, the Canucks and the Poms have a far better ability to laugh at our own delusions of grandeur than pontificate upon what the games do for our sense of nationalism.

And for a plot suggestion, how about LOCOG stuff's up the opening ceremony invites and instead of getting the Royal Family to attend they have the Royle's instead...

Good point. The ability to laugh at oneself seems to be an...brace yourself, Cordelia...Anglo-Saxon concept. I know of no other major culture -- Arab, Hispanic, Slavic -- which does that. (OK, maybe Jewish?) I know some have self-reflection; but that is not the same as self-inflicted humor.

Actually I think the Hispanics can be included in our little coterie of self-inflicted piss-takers...after all Barcelona saw the Catalans send themselves up quite nicely (Cobi was actually used in a series of subversive comics circulated by his creator, and recall how the 92 Closing Ceremony featured the first decent comedic interlude ever featured as part of a SOGs).

Without getting into cultural stereotyping from an outsider's perspective you just have to look at the rampant egos and sensitivities of certain posters to show how some people view the Olympics as part of their national aspirations, and hence utterly off limits to internal or external criticism. And Baron, there's no better demo of this than your rep points  .

Of course games satire/parody has to be well done to actually be worth the effort. For every Roy & HG there has been a Catherine O'Hara (who normally is bloody funny but at Vancouver stank like a ripe beaver carcass). I have a suspicion the good folks at the Beeb will do quite well.
