So...?
The topic has no answer and I'm with Baron: "So?"
But, I think Jim wants to know what course is better or if one of both have been already chosen...
Well, I don't know much about Golf... But about scenery, Gavea is one of the most beautiful in Brazil, since its placed in the Sao Conrado neighbourhood, and it would be a wonderful choice for TV.

Eventually, it'll be the federation that will decide. And then things like security and what the particular course will offer will come into play. The prettiest course may not always get picked.
For sure, Baron, as I said, I don't know much (well, nothing) about golf...
The only thing I can say is that both courses are very very near... Which means, maybe, there it will be some crazy ideas to have both...

I, for one, find extremely ironic that Gávea Golf Club is not located in Gávea, but rather São Conrado. Still, maybe they'll choose Itanhagá due to it being closer to the rest of the Barra cluster. For sure, Baron, as I said, I don't know much (well, nothing) about golf...

There are rumors of new courses being built before 2016. The most promising one is in a new high profile residential compound where a new public 18-hole course would be built. If this course is actually built it will probably be chosen since it would be less than 5 km away from the OV and will probably be built according to the latest trends.
Regarding the name of Gávea. In the past, the district now called S. Conrado used to be called Gávea, due to the mountain (Pedra da Gávea). Then, the S. Conrado church was built in the old district which became know for the name of the church. The other district that grew on the road that connected Jardim Botânico and Gávea (Gávea Road), then started to be called Gávea.
P.S.: Gávea is the circular threshold where observers would stay in old ships.

Itanhangá is also stunning and I have played there where my father is a member. However, both courses though official have holes which are not long enough for the modern golfers. Both courses were built around the 30's.

Good info, Aluz...
Copacabana had a similar history... Since the neighbourhood was called Sacopenapan (the old name of the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon) and in Guarani language means: "small trees lagoon" (not accurate translation made by me).
Then Rio, founded one church in now-Copacabana and named it after Our Lady from Copacabana, since the city received the an image of the Our Lady from Bolivian Government.
Our Lady from Copacabana is the Bolivian national saint.

SANDWICH, England (AP)
A new course in the seaside region of Barra in Rio de Janeiro will host the golf tournament at the 2016 Olympics.
The Royal & Ancient governing body says the Riserva Uno site has been confirmed by Rio's organizing committee as the venue for golf, which is returning to the Olympic program for the first time since 1904.
Peter Dawson, chief executive of the R&A, says ''commercial negotiations are under way to acquire that site ... and a golf course will be designed by an architect yet to be determined.''
Dawson says organizers need to move quickly to ensure the course is built in time for test events in 2015.
As well as individual strokeplay events, Dawson says a team event could also be added to the schedule.

The Rio de Janeiro 2016 Games may be set to stage the first Olympic golf tournament in 112 years, but this fact is now at risk of being overshadowed as the area of land designated for the Olympic golf course is at the centre of a legal dispute.
A report by CNN on the Riserva Uno location where a new course will be developed revealed that there is a legal dispute over the land.
"Right now the property is being presented by a group claiming to be the owner of this land," said Luiz Ernesto Magalhães of Brazilian newspaper O Globo, speaking to the United States based news service.
"Official documents show the land belongs to this group, but there have been disputes, other parties are now claiming rights to this land."
