London has entered the bidding to host the 2015 International Association of Athletics Federations World Athletics Championships.

The 2012 Olympic Games host city will discover in November if the bid is successful.

The award of the 2015 World Championships to the United Kingdom capital would have ramifications on the future of the Olympic Stadium, which has been the subject of interest from Barclays Premier League football club West Ham.

An IAAF statement read: "By the deadline of March 10, letters of intent have been received from Beijing and London, as well as from the Polish city of Chorzow, a city of two million people in the Silesian region.

"The decision on the 2015 host will be taken at the November 2010 Council meeting."

The London Olympic and Paralympic Games will be the showpiece event in what is poised to be a golden decade for sport in the UK.

Last summer saw cricket's World Twenty20 tournament take place and this year, golf's Ryder Cup will be held in south Wales.

In 2013, the Rugby League World Cup will come to the UK, while in 2014 Glasgow will host the Commonwealth Games and Gleneagles will stage the Ryder Cup.

In 2015, England is already playing host to the Rugby Union World Cup, while the football World Cup could follow in 2018 - if a bid is successful.

The 2019 cricket World Cup will be played in England, completing a remarkable 10 years of sport.

Beijing and London will no doubt face some tough competition from Chorzow. Posted Image

Great stuff. The Stadium will reduce capacity at some point - so great idea to bid while we still have the extra seats!

Its one of the events listed in Baroness Ford's "legacy stadium" document.
Landmark events from 2012 to 2015, to justify its 2018 WC use.

IAAF would probably go where they can get the more money.... and with the permanent growing economy in China, I think they would prefer to go there instead in a country that is hosting of one the main major sport event 1 month after, and where main sponsors would be a little bit busy !!!

Presumably this puts the whole stadium legacy debate on ice for a few months now.

I think its clear the way this is going we want to host major athletics events in the Olympic stadium, and other sports events that don’t mind the running track. Its clear reducing the stadium size isn’t a priority consideration right now.

Wasn't Rio also interstd in going after the 2015 IAAFs? Or did that intention fall through?

Good to see Britain and London looking ahead for opportunities - something I don't think Sydney handled well after 2000.

Yea, Beijing are no doubt the favourites to win this event. It will have been 7 years since the 08 Olympics... China has this one in the bag.
