I'm actaully surprised on the level of enthusiasm Erzurum has in hosting the Winter Universade Games.
I mean if its any city which has the best winter facilities to staging such games it would definitely be Bursa or neighboring Ülludağ. However the Turkish government seems to favour Erzurum in promoting Eastern portion of Turkey. This would be somewhat equivalent to the German government's support for Leipzig for a Summer Games as it rests in the less developed Eastern Germany compared to other industrial western portion of that nation. This of course is a good attempt in promoting equal balance in terms of fame and sports facilities.

I read in the Edmonton Sun today that Edmonton will be bidding for the 2011 Universiade. Also noted in the article that Montreal and Taiwan are also bidding.
With Edmonton in the mix for the 2011 SUMMER Universiade, this is only what I have to say about this whole potential scenario: :help:

You are really doing some Amsterdam promotion are you
Too bad the people of Amsterdam aren't exactly sportlovers compared to other Dutch cities...
Utrecht might be suited for the Universiade, depending on what the demands for the venues are. It is home to the biggest University in the country which also happens to be one I'm currently studying

As theone pointed out FISU's Universiades is smaller then the Commonwealth Games. Also if the Commonwealth Games Federation said under there evaluation report "Hamilton would be capable of hosting the Commonwealth Games" then am pretty sure Hamilton can easily host this event without a problem.
Only the last two Commonwealth Games, 2002 and 1998, have had more than 10 sports. Both The University and Commonwealth games place limits, by rule, on the number of sports that can be included in the games. Most of the Universiades since 1985 have had between 11 and 13 sports, while no Commonwealth Games up until 1998 had more than ten sports.
The number of sports is perhaps the least effective indicator of the size of an event.
The University Games clearly are larger by number of nations present. The largest Commonwealth Games, was Manchester 2002 with 72 nations. Fifteen summer University Games have had more nations present, with nine having over 100 nations present. Comparing the size of events by number of nations present also has weaknesses. It is very common for a delegation to consist of just one or two athletes.
When comparing the size of an event by the number of athletes present, the University Games are clearly much larger, with ten games having more participants than the reported 3690 athletes that were at Manchester
See the FISU and Commonwealth Games Federation sites for details.
The University Games are the larger event.

I doubt that any British city will bid for the Universiade after the event nearly bankrupted the City of Sheffield in 1991. The Universiade is never shown on British TV.....people are just not all that interested in University sports in the UK.
As for Belfast, they have enough political problems that I am almost 100% sure that neither the City Council or the Northern Ireland Assembly would ever be able to agree on the funding or staging of the event.

In how far helps the hosting of an Universiade to a city bidding for Olympic Games?
