I hope that Izmir will do well in hosting the 2005 Summer Universiade.

Now that the 2005 Summer Universiade is about to officially get underway, I'm sure those from Bangkok are going to see how it is operated throughout the Games.

Amsterdam has bid for 1992 Olympic but they didn't get much support from the citizens.
But if Amsterdam bid again I'll sure support it... coz this city is so lovely!
But if Amsterdam bid again I'll sure support it... coz this city is so lovely!
For instance, they had a lot of problems organising the Amsterdam Marathon a few years ago. Shop owners downtown were complaining about their accessibility. In the end they had to build several temporary bridges over the roads. As a result the biggest part of the marathon now takes place outside the city. Not a real problem because the people of Amsterdam don't seem to be interested in it anyway. There are many more examples where that came from but I won't bore you with them.
It is too bad, Amsterdam is the only Dutch city that might have a very slim chance to ever host the olympics again. When the attitude of the people over there isn't going to change that is never going to happen though.

The USA should seriously consider this as well. LA would be a suitable place for a Summer Universiade, with many of the events at the Home Depot Center. :wwww:

Vancouver. London. Sochi. Who's next?

Government officials in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada are re-grouping after their loss in the race to land the 2010 Commonwealth Games and are hinting at a possible attempt to bid for the 2009 World University Games.
Hamilton Mayor Larry Di Ianni met with Peter George, President of McMaster University's last month to discuss possible University games options.
Most of the motivation for the bid is to attempt to tap into funding that the government had said it would provide, if Hamilton won the 2010 Commonwealth Games. Hamilton officials are hoping that money may still be available, and that they might be able to get some, whether they get a major sport event or not.
Government officials are citing the precedent of Toronto, which lost the 2008 Olympic bid, but was given $1.5 billion (cdn) anyway for a waterfront development project.

A World University Games would be perfect for Hamilton since Hamilton 2010 Commonwealth Games bid was centred on McMaster University.
Plus Hamilton is pretty thirsty to host any major sporting event and won't stop till they win something big.

I guess that the bids for the 2009 Summer or Winter Universiade is still in the air.

I see, Ripley. Too bad for Sheffield then. I hope it has fully recovered from that experience.
As for the USA, it will be interesting if it will bid for the 2009 Summer Universiade. Like you said, it has not hosted it since Buffalo, NY, 1993 and it has been the only one so far, for a nation that has hosted the most Summer Olympics.

Official web site of Harbin 2009
Nice pictures of the competition venues
And food for thought about a future Chinese Olympic bid...

Too bad.....but you're right about Amsterdam. Unfortunately it is the only dutch city, with international "fame" so changes of Amsterdam organising any major sport events in the near future are very slim.....
