Today the FISU take the decission to award Harbin for 2009 Winter Universiade and Belgrade with the Summer Universiade in the same year.
Is that official? I've gotta admit, the Universiades have virtually no profile here in Australia. I've been trawling through the overnight sports news reports here, and I haven't found any single mention of this news.

I assume the Harbin boosters will be filling us in later in the day.

Oh, boy. Let's hope it is not like what happened to Saskatoon earlier, if another Canadian city does bid.

Edmonton is in. Here's a quote from the Edmonton Journal from yesterday.....

"Mayor Stephen Mandel said he was pleased to hear people praise Edmonton's facilities and delighted with the life the event injected into the city.

Now, he said, Edmonton is pursuing the 2011 Universiade Games and is talking to masters groups about other events, such as major track and field meets."
With that, I wonder if Calgary's decision to go for the 2014 Commonwealth Games had something to do this piece of news. The city was rumored to want to bid for the 2011 Winter Universiade. If it wanted to do that, it would have to compete against Edmonton for it. No country can bid for both Universiades for a same year.

As most of you know, the upcoming Universiades are as follows:

2005 Winter Universiade: Innsbruck/Seefeld (AUSTRIA)
2005 Summer Universiade: Izmir (TURKEY)
2007 Winter Universiade: Turin [Torino] (ITALY)
2007 Summer Universiade: Bangkok (THAILAND)

The bidding periods for the both 2009 Universiades are now underway. To see the official bidding periods of your choice, click on a particular link below:

The only countries who care about these things are those who want to make a mark for themselves in the world. China was literally hugging itself when it hosted the 2001 Universiade while more developed countries could care less about them.
That's in dispute, to some "developed" countries. Italy hosted this year's Winter Universiade and will do so again in just 4 years from now in Torino. San Antonio is thinking of pursuing a bid for the 2009 Summer Universiade, but it is unclear at this time.

But, you're right on one point that it gets the thumbs-down for media newsworthy overall. I had to rely completely on the Internet here for news from the Daegu Summer Universiade for Canada's performance. Let's just say it was "dismal" at best.

Finally something Stephen Mandel and I agree on, getting more major sporting events!  It would be awesome if the Commonwealth Stadium could somehow become a major Track & Field venue ... Although im not sure if that many people would show besides me, lol.

Well, the CBC has now confirmed that Edmonton will try to get the 2011 Summer Universiade:

Canada definetely needs to look at potential bids for Universiades....so far, we have only concentrated on the Commonwealth, Olympic, and Pan Am Games.
