No it won't. I reckon the Indian authorities should read Simon Mann's BBC column and take heed.

India will make a strong bid to host the Olympic games in 2016, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President Suresh Kalmadi said here today.
While briefing mediapersons here today, the IOA chief said after gaining the privilege to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, every effort will be made to get Olympic games to India.
''The IOA will not be found wanting in any way in its endeavour to host the 2016 Olympics,'' he said.
Mr Kalmadi, who is also the president of the Asian Athletics Association (AAA), said world attention will be focussed on India during the closing ceremony of the March 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games when the flag will be presented to India.
India is also likely to get an opportunity to host the 2014 Asian Games. South Korea is a strong contender for hosting the 2014 Asian Games, but since they had already hosted the last Games in Busan, it is India who will, in all probability, get the opportunity, Mr Kalmadi said. India had hosted the Asian Games in Delhi in 1982.

It depends on who wins the 2014 competition.
I think India has a chance.
Thoughts?

India has also has to invest more in sport - they are one of the constant under achievers in the Olympics,
I think other than Field Hockey and/or cricket, Indians don't seem to be driven to have to have that gold medal. Besides, if Montreal and Calgary did not bring golds to the home team, why should India have to play by different rules?
P.S. It is NEW Delhi. Plain old Delhi is another, older city.

I'm starting to be like a broken record here, but if (New) Delhi were to be a candidate city for the Olympic Games, where would the sailing events be held? I can't be sure, but I don't think this sport is part of their 2010 Commonwealth Games.

India has a lot of coast. I'm sure they could find somewhere.
If they are going to bid, they need to get experianced people who've done this sort of thing for years in right now, and they need to start working right now. Otherwise they won't make it through the perliminaries.

2016 is probably a cycle to early for India. Notwithstanding that it is probably too early after 2008 for the IOC to bring the games back to Asia, it still has its work cut-out to convince the world in general and the IOC in particular that it is up to it. The Commonwealth Games would be a big help in this, the touble being that the decision for 2016 happens in 2009 - one year BEFORE the Delhi CWGs.
Once again, though, we are left with the tantalising prospect that 2020 could be a wide open race with new frontiers bidders having their best chance ever _ and Delhi (sorry, New Delhi _ would be aas well placed then as any of them.
