its not about the size of the boat, but its motion in the ocean !

Portugal held what was considered by many as the best Euro championship. Im sure they can pull something out of the bag with a world cup bid.

So... any new plan about the bid???

And what is most important: if Spain-Portugal don't win in 2018 and a country like the USA or Australia do, then will we win in 2022???

I suppose you'll have to start looking at where those who voted for the 2018 winner would put their votes for 2022.

If USA or Australia wins 2018, I suspect the votes may move more in favour of England than Spain/Portugal unless many consciously decide not to have two English speaking hosts in a row.

I think 2018 will be in Europe though.

Yesterday was held in Lisbon the second meeting between both federations to discuss bid-related matters. Here are some of the points discussed and decided about:

  • A single bid committee will be created as a foundation under the name "Iberian Bid Committee for the FIFA World Cup 2018/2022";
  • The bid committee will be equitative, including an even number of members from both federations, and will be nominated until the end of April;
  • The bid committee will be based in Madrid and presided by Angel Villar (RFEF president), with Gilberto Madail (FPF president) acting as assistant-president;
  • Several bid logo proposals were asked from Portuguese and Spanish agencies. In May, the logo will be chosen and sent to FIFA for approval;
  • The bid committee will attend several FIFA workshops and events, such as World Cup draws and final tournaments, taking the opportunity to promote the candidature;
  • Both federations have ordered bid viability studies to assess the economical, financial and cultural benefits from hosting the World Cup in 2018 or 2022.
  • A bid website is on the making...
Next meeting in Madrid, in May.

Wow, there hasn't been much activity in this thread. The truth is there hasn't been much to comment. The logo and the website haven´t been released yet, the joint bid comitee was legally constituted this month in Madrid... The most remarkable thing this last weeks, at least from this side of the border, is that 25 stadia from 20 cities have submitted their candidatures to the Spanish Football Federation.

The list of candidates by regions would be:

Andalusia (4)
Seville: La Cartuja (65,000), Sánchez Pizjuán (46,000; to be remodeled and expanded to 66,000), & Ruiz de Lopera (51,000)
Málaga: La Rosaleda (29,000)

Aragon (1)
Zaragoza: San José (43,000; up to 50,000 with additional grandstands; to be built)

Asturias (2)
Gijon: El Molinón (25,000; to be remodeled)
Oviedo: Carlos Tartiere (30,000)

Basque Country (2)
Bilbao: New San Mamés (58,000; to be built)
Donostia-San Sebastián: Anoeta (32,000; to be remodeled and expanded to 40,000)

Catalonia (4)
Barcelona: Camp Nou (98,000; to be remodeled), Olímpic de Montjüic (56,000) & Cornellà-El Prat (40,000; to be inaugurated this season)
Girona: Montilivi (10,000; to be completely remodeled)

Cantabria (1)
Santander: El Sardinero (22,000)

Castile and León (2)
Valladolid: José Zorrilla (26,000)
Salamanca: Helmántico (just 7,000) or a brand new project

Extremadura (1)
Badajoz: Nuevo Vivero (15,000; to be remodeled and expanded to 30 or 45 thousand spectators)

Galicia (2)
A Coruña: Riazor (36,000; to be remodeled)
Vigo: Balaídos (32,000)

Community of Madrid (2)
Madrid: Santiago Bernabéu (80,000) & La Peineta (22,000; to be completely remodeled and expanded to 73,000)

Region of Murcia (1)
Murcia: Nueva Condomina (30,000)

Valencian Community (3)
Valencia: Nou Mestalla (75,000; in construction)
Alicante: José Rico Peréz (30,000; to be remodeled)
Elche: Martínez Valero (39,000)

A shortlist is expected on 17th August.

"Two Countries, One Cup" doesn't quite have the ring of "One World, One Dream," does it? :blink:

We could always go for "One Peninsula, One Cup" :P

Anyways, yeah, things have been quiet around here, after the bid committee was constituted. Many of the other bids have already released their websites and logos, so their lobbying has started for quite some time - at least publicly.

On what concerns stadia, I've only heard about the proposal from Braga (northern Portugal). The AXA Stadium - the two-grandstand one that was built in a quarry, remember? - is some 10,000 seats short, so if Braga is shortlisted, I wonder how they'll bypass the architectural concept already in place, without damaging its look.

Two "portuguese speaking" world cups in a row (1,5 actually)! That would be historic :lol:
Go, Tugas!!!
