BIG news... Durban was the only SA city to submit a bid...seems no chance of Cape Town 2020 now
Durban puts hand up for 2020
Tuesday September 7, 2010
It’s official — Durban was the only South African city to submit a bid to possibly host the 2020 Olympic Games.
South Africa’s Olympic governing body SASCOC invited four cities to apply for the hosting rights — Cape Town, Durban, Port Elizabeth and Johannesburg.
But it was confirmed by SASCOC’s CEO Tubby Reddy at the national Olympic governing body’s Annual General Meeting at the weekend that of those four cities only the coastal city of Durban submitted a bid.
The bidding process is now finalised as far as SASCOC are concerned and the decision on whether a formal bid will be submitted to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for consideration now rests with the national government.
Extensive investigation and feasibility studies will now be done as national and local government attempt to get buy-in for the bid.
After the IOC Session to be hosted in Durban in August, 2011, the IOC will then send a formal invitation for countries to submit bids for the right to host the Summer Games.
The IOC executive board then conducts its own exhaustive investigations before the host for the 2020 Olympics is finally announced at the IOC Session in Buenos Aires, Argentina in 2013.

When I read that the South African Olympic Committee had invited FOUR cities to submit bids, I immediately thought, who in the world the 4th?!
Port Elizabeth??
And a lot of you are drastically dragging down Durban's chances.
Port Elizabeth!

I agree on the laughing about Port Elizabeth...
Hey any chance that the Durban 2020 thread can be moved from the 2010 World Cup thread to the Future bid discussions thread?

Is this it? The end of the supposed-to-be-interesting South African domestic race for the Olympics? Is Durban the only city in the country that thinks it's ready to host the Olympics in 2020?
Yeah, I'm a bit surprised... And according to the article, South Africa has yet to decide if they will finally bid or not.
I would advise Madrid officials to bid for 2020. This may be a unique chance to host, even with Durban as a rival. 2024 seems difficult (achievable, though), but from 2028 onwards, there will be many new frontiers and countries like the USA going for the Olympics, and Spain could have it almost impossible to win then.

It's better to me to wait a little before put something about 2020 on my signature... I will wait a little before make my decision.
This South Africa issue will take more time. I don't believe they will decide this soon.

GBForums have been boring lately... Miss the good discussions and points. The nice follow-ups on buildings and so on...
Now we have only chat with trolls or weeks without the old good boys posting...
So I'm giving a break, but I'll be back soon. Meanwhile I'll be around in SkyScrapercity, where no trolling and city vs. city is allowed.

Cape Town wants chance to bid for 2020 Olympics
21 September 2010
By Duncan MackayBritish Sports Internet Writer of the Year
Cape Town, who bid unsuccessfully for the 2004 Games, have claimed that they were not advised by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) that the deadline for submitting an application was the end of July.
Pieter Cronje, a spokesman for Cape Town, said yesterday the "two-paragraph letter" received from Sascoc was "open-ended".
He added: "All we are saying is before we failed in our bid to host the 2004 Olympics there was an extensive sit-down process.
"This time we just heard that Durban was chosen, which came as a surprise."
Cape Town now want the opportunity to submit their own bid for SASCOC to consider.
"We would like to consider the possibility of a bid, but it's no small exercise," said Cronje.
"But there should be enough time for the city to express interest."
It is a request that SASCOC are considering, especially as Durban have admitted that they are still in the preliminary stages of planning their bid.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will not open the bidding process for 2020 until after their Session in Durban next July, where they will choose the host cities for the 2018 Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
The host for 2020 is due to be announced by the IOC at its Session in Buenos Aires in 2013.
"It really is too early to speculate on anything," said Michael Sutcliffe, the Durban city manager.
"What we have said is that we have the backing of SASCOC for Durban but there still is a fair amount of work to do.
"The bidding process opens in mid-July next year, so it is premature and improper for us to talk about our bid or about other cities - more so because Durban is also hosting the International Olympic Committee next year."

If Cape Town bid Mo, would they still be able to do the rowing course that was proposed for 2004. I really thought it was one of the more scenic ones I have seen..
