If Cape Town bids for the 2020 Games, Newlands stadium, would be temporarily covered and be split into two arenas. The seating configuration and sight lines would ensure an intimate environment and good views of the action.

The cost of the temporary roof cover would need to compared to the cost of constructing two temporary arenas, with a capacity of 15,000 and 12,000 seats. In my opinion a temporary roof cover would be significantly cheaper due to the extensive amount of facilities already offered at this venue.

The venue would stage Indoor Volleyball and Handball finals in Arena 1, and Basketball finals, Artistic Gymnastics and Trampoline in arena 2.

The following links providing a great 3-d view of the stadium.

Oh no, no way I let any outdoor stadium be covered and split into two arenas. That is stupid idea. Why the heck can't Cape Town afford a large 12-15,000-seat indoor arena for Basketball and Gymnastics events?
My Ranking of the 2018 Winter Olympic candidates cities:

1. Pyeongchang, Republic of Korea
2. Munich, Germany
3. Annecy, France

It's really too bad that Capetown didn't build the new stadium as a convertible one (with the simple matter of putting in a running track like 12 feet higher (per the last SF-49ers plan when SF was still in the running for the 2016 U.S. Olympic nod). Because now, with those photographs, Capetown would actually have photos of an existing, iconic venue that would be among the lead images of a 2020 bid.

At the same time, show that it is a sensible, economical bid -- rather than a free-spending irresponsible bid.

It would really be interesting come 2013, if Rio does not make it this time...to see Rio pitted against Capetown. Of course the 'frugality' and TV timing would favor Rio. What Capetwon would have going for it is (1) the new frontiers idea (which Rio would also be pushing); and (ii) its 2010 experience...providing that goes well.

Its a balance I think. Our previous mayor i.e. the world's best mayor was sensible. No city needs an 80,000 seat athletics stadium. What we do need is a 20,000 seat venue whether or not we host the Games, and a major aquatic centre which is now in planning for the 2015 FINA World Champs.

Several venues are already in legacy phase and close to 70% of venues require only temporary works.

On the issue of covering the football venue. The proposal dates back to the previous bid. Cape Town has no need for a 15,000 and 12,000 seat arena, and the cost of two temporary arenas is likely to exceed the temporary cover for the football stadium.

It will probably work even better than Atlanta 1996 since the stadium bowl runs parallel to the field and the stadium itself is very intimate with the second tier overlapping the first tier.

/\ And they just didn't schedule the events at both arenas simultaneously. That cut out the competing noise and too many people exiting problems.

Based on what London is paying for its temporary arenas, a temporary roof cover makes economic sense.
