would Annency go for it?  I mean isn't Annency promised the next French winter bid?

I really believe this would be a huge error by France - they should continue to concentrate on a Parisian bid for the Summer Games!

With an improved bid and a better presentation Paris would stand a better chance than almost any other city.  Both Athens and Beijing came back after being narrowly defeated in the final round of the competition when both had been expected to win.  The same would be true of Paris next time, as well as their usual support base they would get a large sympathy vote as a result of the 2012 campaign.  Whether in 2020 or 2024 Paris would be almost certainly guaranteed to win.  However, if France bid for the Winter Games with either Grenoble or Annency they will win that as their "compensation"  instead and any advantage to a Paris summer bid will be lost.

The French must decide what they want most, a Paris Summer Games or a provincial Winter Games, in my mind there is no contest - Paris MUST bid!
True _ and it's a telling fact that the French Olympic Committee hasn't exactly heartily embraced any of its recent winter bids. They seemed to even actively discourage Annecy's bid after they lost 2012.

I hope you're right memorabilia, and the French NOC ignore these local mayors in order that they can try again for the "main prize" - after London there are no other cities that I'd prefer to hold the Summer Olympics more than Paris.  So with any luck I will see both relatively soon!

I was a Paris supporter (well, my 2nd choice), Cordelia; and I still believe, like many of the GB stalwarts here -- that if Paris shoots for 2024 and didn't get it, then I would have the IOC commit harakiri.

As Stu said, you guys already got one consolation Winter Games; kinda cowardly to go for another one -- and that's how it's going to seem no matter what you say.

London and the Brits outsmarted Paris last July; and of course Chirac didn't help either.  And come July 2017, don't have Moscow or Rome or Tokyo be the G-8 host.  I think Tony Blair's hosting it this year made him try HARDER not to have CHirac come to Gleneagles and rub it in his face that Paris bested London.  If the G8 meet last year were hosted by say, Canada, or a non-bidding country, Paris could've conceivably won.

Anyway, shudda, cudda.  So, for all the Olympic contests 2014 - 2022, Paris should really build allies and horsetrade its votes for a 2024 build-up.  A Grenoble candidacy would also fall flat on its face.  WHy should they give another Winter Games to France when it's already had 2 in the post-war years?  Play its cards right, and Paris could have 2024 for the asking.

Judging by the response of people on this thread, and primarily by anglo-saxons too, I would say that a Paris Summer Games enjoys more support than perhaps Cordelia and others appreciate - so much for the hatred and the conspiracy of the rest of the world with regards to France.

The French NOC has annouced last week than there will not be any winter bid before a summer vitory !
That's really good news - did they give any hints as to when they will consider a bid (I don't want them to miss Europe's next turn if Madrid, Rome or Berlin bid for 2020).

J-F Lamour said not before 2024 -

"Paris 2024"

- looks good doesn't it!

But if they would prefer another Winter Games I suppose it's up to them. :(

How can he decide what his successors will do during the next ten years? This is just pathetic that he thinks he can have any influence on any future bid process beyond May 2007.

Anyway, what does he want ? A guarantee that Paris will win ? Any French bid will have the same probability of success as the 2012 bid, at best. There will never be any guarantee.

The IOC does not work like that. They make promises, but the day of the vote, they do what they please.

Ask Sion, Paris, Toronto, Östersund or Salzburg. Or Detroit.
Agree with you more (but don't tell Cordelia) :)

Hektor, dont take is as an offense but I dont think you represent today's France. I think my opinion illustrates better what the French youth think about the IOC and another Paris bid. By the way, Lamour isnt the ony politician to think Paris shouldnt bid; Delanoë is PS and has the same opinion, so no matter who his successors will be, this decision is very likely to be maintened.

I dont think anybody wants to be sure to win, which is, of course, impossible (as long as you do it fairly). I think he's just (like many French people), sick and tired of bidding and spending energy, time, and money to convince people who systematically reject any Paris bid, for some blurry reasons.

The only new asset that can prop up a French bid would be a political victory of Mr Sarkozy next year, replacing Chirac. Having a young, dynamic, and very charismatic leader could help us.
