Barcelona Spain recently formalized a bid for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games, 21 years after it hosted the Summer Olympics.

According to the Spanish Publication The Independent, Barcelona Mayor Xavier Trias confirmed Barcelona's intentions during a meeting of Franco-Spanish entrepreneurs held recently in the French Chamber of Commerce of Barcelona.  If successful, it would be the first time a city has hosted both Summer and Winter versions of the Olympic Games.

However Barcelona's bid would be terminated if Madrid, also in Spain, wins its bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.  Or, things could be detrimental in reverse if International Olympic Committee (IOC) members believe Spain has lost its focus on the 2020 prize, or they prefer to award Spain a chance at the Winter Games and choose a different nation for 2020.

With only 40 days to go before the IOC votes for the host city of the 2020 Games at its all-members session in Buenos Aires on September 7, the Mayor admitted the timing of the announcement may be "indecent".

Bidding frequently for both Summer and Winter Olympic Games has become a tradition in Spain.  Since hosting the Barcelona Games in 1992, Spain has applied for the Winter Games four times - in 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014 - all by the city of Jaca near the border of France in the Pyrenees.  The National Olympic Committee has also pursued five Summer Games - the 2004 and 2008 Games for the city of Seville, and the 2012, 2016 and 2020 Games for Madrid.

Should Barcelona host the 2022 Games, snow events would be held two hours away in the ski resorts of the Pyrenees. Other events could take place in the Principality of Andorra, at Pas de la Casa-Grau Roig, Soldeu.

Other cities expressing interest in hosting the 2022 Winter Olympic Games include Munich, Stockholm, Lviv in the Ukraine, and Krakow Poland.

Barcelona's application would be submitted to the Spanish Olympic Committee by November 14 and the host city of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games will be elected in October 2015 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
