National Olympic Committee head Serhy Bubka said Monday Ukraine will submit a bid to host the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

Bubka said Ukraine must come up with a concept for the 2022 Olympics but is confident Ukraine can win the bid, even though it must prepare for the Olympics from scratch.

He said, "usually it takes seven years to get ready to host the Olympics. Other countries have also started from scratch, and we will do the same"

Meanwhile Vice President Borys Kolesnykov said it would be possible to build the infrastructure needed for the Winter Olympics.  "If we start preparations now, the Olympic committee will accept our application".

Kolesnykov said it is too early to talk about the investments needed. "It is expensive if one prepares for the Games for the first time. However, if we invest US$1 billion annually we stand a good chance to be ready by 2022. Now we have to persuade the International Olympic Committee".

Although he didn't specify the venue for the Winter Olympics, Ivano-Frankivsk or Lviv, he said Lviv looks more attractive as there will be a modern airport (to be built for the Euro 2012 soccer championships), proximity to borders, and a favourable climate. He added conditions in Zakarpatya and Ivano-Frankivsk will also be studied.
