Annecy held a "Lake Festival" Saturday featuring Europe's largest fireworks display at which 150,000 people were in attendance.

The event, which has been held for the past 150 years, was at the Paquier lawns by the lake, the proposed site of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies should Annecy host the 2018 Winter Olympic Games.

The fireworks display lasted for around 90 minutes with a musical accompaniment and is held every year on the first Saturday in August.

The stands, which seat up to 40,000, are set up alongside the lawns, but the display can be seen for miles around.

Over the years the festival has evolved and since 1950 has been a major tourist attraction.

On Saturday the show covered major events of the past 150 years before turning to the future and the welcoming of the Opening Ceremony of the 2018 Olympics.

Annecy is competing with Munich and PyeongChang for the 2018 Games. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will announce the host city on July 6, 2011.
