If London Mayor Boris Johnson has his way, International Olympic officials will be using public transportation during the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games.

The Associated Press reports Johnson said the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and other Games family should use London buses and underground trains for "all non essential trips".

He added that athletes and officials will still have the use of the specially designated Olympic Route Network to travel to the venues.

According to the Associated Press Johnson said he discussed the issue by telephone Wednesday with IOC president Jacques Rogge.

Meanwhile IOC spokesman Mark Adams said Rogge will encourage people to use public transport "where appropriate".
