The Straits Times reports that Singapore has set up the Organizing Committee for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in 2010.

The committee has 22 members from the public, private and “people” sectors, and is chaired by Ng Ser Miang, a member of the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) executive board.

Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development said, “Singapore YOG Organizing Committee has been entrusted with the heavy responsibility of staging the first-ever Youth Olympic Games in just under two and a half years. This is a big challenge but I am confident that, with the expertise and resources that the board has, coupled with the leadership of Ng Ser Miang, Singapore will give the young athletes participating a truly memorable and exciting Games”.

The committee will be assisted by a Panel of Advisors comprising four members – Defence Minister and President of the Singapore National Olympic Council Teo Chee Hean, Parliamentary Secretary Teo Ser Luck, Finance and Education Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Dr. Balakrishnan.

An Inter-Ministry Committee has also been set up to support the work of Singapore 2010 and there will be five committees in Sports, Culture and Education, Community Outreach, Youth Engagement and Business and Marketing. Write or read comments about this article
