Sochi 2014 – Zero Waste Goal, Environmental Initiative
Sochi 2014 is planning for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games and for a legacy once the Games are over. Sochi says it wants to leave behind “an incredible environmental legacy for future generations” and has implemented what it calls a world-class “Zero Waste Goal” project.
According to the plan Sochi says there will be a 100 per cent treatment of the solid and biological waste products in the city of Sochi which should significantly improve the environment of the resort and promote the introduction of modern “green” technologies across Russia.
The project will include the closure and regeneration of existing dumps, as well as the construction of environmentally sound recycling plants. A combined system of all-level waste utilization management from collection to processing will be created.
The project will be implemented and financed as part of the $12 billion Federal Target Programme for the development of Sochi and will expand the “Zero Waste” initiatives outlined in the Sochi 2014 Candidature File.
A major goal is to apply these initiatives not only to Olympic venues, but also to the whole of the region (more than 3,500 sq. km.) with project objectives scheduled to be reached before the 2014 Games.
A tender for the inaugural scientific study on “Researching the problem of waste collection, storage and utilization” will be announced this month as the first initiative of the project.
Meanwhile, on the occasion of World Forestry Day Wednesday, Sochi 2014 and the Government of the Russian Federation are unveiling a “groundbreaking” environmental initiative designed to support and protect Sochi National Park, home to more than 30,000 rare plant species.
The reforestation initiative is one of several major environment projects that Sochi 2014 outlined in its Candidature File.
World Forestry Day is celebrated yearly on March 21 and its theme this year is biodiversity.
