According to newspaper reports Bulgaria’s 2014 Winter Olympic bid initiative committee spent nearly one million leva presenting its bid, said Vassil Ivanov, former sport minister and committee representative. It’s almost three times higher than the initially planned 350,000 leva.

Ivanov made the announcement at a committee meeting June 27. According to initial calculations the committee’s over-expenditure has reached 218,000 leva.

Belcho Goranov, a representative of Bulgaria’s Olympic Committee, said that the state agency for youth and sport promised to cover any over-expenditure related to Bulgaria’s bid.

Agency representative Efrem Efremov said before making any payments the agency would calculate all expenditures. An independent auditing report will be ready by September 15.

Expenditures deemed unreasonable would not be accepted said Efremov. He added the state budget would cover all other spending made to promote Sofia’s 2014 bid.

Sofia was not one of the three cities selected by the International Olympic Committee last week for the 2014 Winter Olympic Games short list. Write or read comments about this article
