Milan Opts Out Of 2016 Summer Olympic Games Bid
The Associated Press quotes Italian news reports that Milan will not bid for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, making the city of Rome Italy’s sole candidate.
Milan’s newly elected Mayor Letizia Moratti reportedly sent a letter to the president of the Italian Olympic Committee (IOC) saying her city was pulling out of the race.
Moratti had asked for a few months to review and possibly make changes to the bid by the former Mayor Gabriele Albertini, but according to The Associated Press the IOC rejected the request on the grounds that Italy needed to select its candidate soon.
Moratti’s letter said, “at this point, the city of Milan can only withdraw its candidacy”.
Rome’s Mayor Walter Veltroni welcomed the decision and said, “Rome’s candidacy is even stronger and supported by the whole country”.
The IOC will select the 2016 host city in 2009. Write or read comments about this article
