Georgy Poltavchenko, Mayor of Saint Petersburg Russia, said Sunday at a ceremony marking the arrival of the Olympic torch ahead of the Sochi Winter Games, that Saint Petersburg is likely to bid for a Summer Olympic Games reports RIA Novosti.
Poltavchenko said, "we are looking at the question of Saint Petersburg making an application to host the Summer Olympics. I am sure that in the very near future Saint Petersburg will not be a intermediate stage on the Olympic relay, but will be its final destination".
But the Mayor didn't say which Summer Olympic Games Saint Petersburg will bid for. The next possible year for an Olympic bid is 2024. A decision on the host city for the 2024 Summer Games is expected to be in 2017.
