L.A. Should Bid For A Future Games
Los Angeles Councilman Tom LaBonge introduced a motion Friday that would put the city in support of hosting the Olympic Games for a third time.
LaBonge said, "we hosted in 1932 and 1984 and Los Angeles embodies the Olympic movement. Los Angeles has the history and the weather and the athletes", he said, adding it also has the sports venues - from LA Live and Staples Center to the Coliseum, Galen Center at USC, and the remodelled Pauley Pavilion at UCLA.
He added, "and now, with 45 London medals to Los Angeles' name, we have the athletes, too".
A draft of LaBonge's motion called for the Southern California and U.S. Olympic Committees to analyze the appropriate time for the city to host the Games. The motion reads, "while the next opportunity to bid on the Summer Olympics would be for 2024, that would mean the Olympics will not have been in the United States for 28 years since the Games of Atlanta in 1996. While other great cities of the world will be competing for consideration, perhaps from the African continent, it is the hope of Angelenos to one day host, for a third time, the Olympic Games".
LaBonge thought 2032 might be a good date to host the Games since it would mark the 100th anniversary of the first time the city hosted the Olympics.
Barry Smith, who chairs the Southern California Olympic Committee, said he is also prepared to submit a future bid. He said, "our commitment will be for Los Angeles, whenever it is appropriate, to submit a bid to host the Games. The first real opportunity will be 2026 and we will be working with the U.S. Olympic Committee (USOC) to do whatever they think is appropriate".Write or read comments about this article
