Istanbul 2020 launched a public competition Wednesday to select a logo for the Candidate City phase of Turkey's bid for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Potential logo designs have been put on the Istanbul 2020 website www.Istanbul2020.com.tr, and residents can vote for the design they feel best represents their nation's Olympic dream.

Istanbul 2020 says once the logo is selected, the overall look of the bid and supporting design for a new website and promotional materials will be developed.

Hasan Arat, leader of the Istanbul 2020 bid, said that as the Olympic bid is a national priority in Turkey, the winning design for the logo will generate huge interest.

The competition will run for a week and the winning logo will be sent to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for approval before it is announced.

Arat said, "Turkey is a nation filled with millions of educated, talented young people, most of whom support Istanbul 2020. So it is no surprise to see several of the shortlisted logo designs coming from our nation's talented young designers.

"I am sure that whichever logo is selected, it will help us to promote our national dream to host a Games that, for the first time ever, spans two continents and provides a bridge to unite and inspire the next generation all over the world".
