Baku Azerbaijan Ready To Host 2020 Olympics
Youth and Sports Minister Azad Rahimov said Azerbaijan, which submitted a bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in its capital, Baku, will be ready to host the Games by 2016.
He told the Respublika newspaper, "preparations are underway at the moment to build a 63,000-seat football stadium, rhythmic gymnastics complex, and an Olympic complex with a swimming pool".
"The country already has the Kur Olympic complex for rowing which allows Azerbaijan to host European and world championships and Olympic Games at a high level. There are already 31 Olympic complexes in Azerbaijan at the moment and 10 more are under construction. All this shows that Azerbaijan is able to host the 2016 Olympic Games", he told Interfax-Azerbaijan.
The Sports Minister added that 9,489 sports facilities, three sports palaces, 128 stadiums, 2,202 gyms and 58 swimming pools have been built in Azerbaijan during the years of independence.
He added, "more athletes from the country take part in Olympic Games. A total of 23 athletes from Azerbaijan participated in the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, while over 44 athletes participated in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, The medals tally has also increased from one medal in Atlanta to seven medals in Beijing".
Baku Azerbaijan is bidding along with Madrid, Rome, Tokyo, Istanbul, and Doha for the 2020 Summer Games.Write or read comments about this article
