Rio 2016 Venue To Be Environmentally Friendly
Under an agreement signed by state governor Sergio Cabral, the Water and Sewage Company of Rio de Janeiro (Cedae), and contractors RJS/Cyrella and Carvalho Hosken, Barra da Tijuca, one of the main venues in Rio 2016's Summer Olympic bid will be the site of an environmental clean-up program in five years.
The new project, which was outlined in Rio 2016's Candidature File, includes the construction of a system capable of collecting 450 litres of wastewater per second, which negates the need to construct treatment plans in Barra da Tijuca condominiums.
The R$7 million investment will reportedly benefit about 10,000 people.
Should Rio host the 2016 Games the region of Barra da Tijuca will be the venue for competitions in 19 Olympic sports and 13 Paralympic sports, as well as the site of the Olympic Village, the International Broadcast Centre (IBC), and the Main Press Centre (MPC).
Rio 2016 general manager of infrastructure Alexandre Techima said, "the environmental issue is very important for Rio 2016. The signing of this partnership will further improve the quality of life in Barra da Tijuca, a region key to the Olympic candidature".
