A Baku 2016 delegation, led by First Vice-Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov, is at SportAccord in Athens Greece awaiting the short list of Candidate Cities bidding for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games to be announced Wednesday by the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) Executive Board.

Azad Rahimov, Minister of Sport, said in a media release, “we have submitted a strong Bid Book and worked hard for the last six months to convince the IOC that Baku has the potential to host such a mega event. We have confidence in the IOC and know that the competition would be a wonderful experience for our country. Our achievements would help Azerbaijan to create an awareness of its potential.

“The climate, location right on the Caspian Sea, and close proximity of the venues create tailor-made conditions for athletes from all over the world”.

The government has approved the building of 24 Olympic sports complexes in all provinces, and the construction of an Olympic-sized aquatic centre, as well as a multifunctional gymnastics complex. Write or read comments about this article
