A Future Melbourne Olympic Bid?

Although Australia's Premier Ted Baillieu has hinted at a possible Melbourne Olympic bid, he has nixed a proposal to commission a feasibility study, saying that the state must first rebuild "budget capacity".

Baillieu said, "Melbourne has a fantastic track record for major events. We do sporting events very well. We've got a fantastic calendar this year. Our focus currently is on rebuilding budget capacity, focusing on productivity, and focusing on growing our economy".

However Baillieu said he believes Melbourne would be well equipped to host the Olympics.

Melbourne's Lord Mayor Robert Doyle said the city would be a world-class location. He said, "the world's best sporting venues are already here. We know how to run events in Melbourne and we'd do it in our own way. All we need to do is dream large. Don't be satisfied with second best. Think what we could do if we did dream large for 2024 or 2028".

But Melbourne may have to wait a little longer. The Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) has already stated it was planning its next Olympic bid around Brisbane.
