Hobart 2020 To Hold Public Rally

Hobart's bid committee for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games is holding it's first major event Saturday, a public rally, to gain support for its bid.

The rally is to take place at Hobart's Parliament Lawns from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m., with several major speakers and supporters expected to attend to rally behind the cause, said a press release.

Hobart 2020 says the event will also provide the public a chance to ask questions about the bid and find out further information on the campaign. There will also be numerous activities being held with prizes for participants.

World Champion axeman David Foster, who will have the proposed main stadium for the bid named after him, said "having Hobart host the Olympics would be absolutely fantastic for the state from a tourism and awareness perspective and would show that Tasmanians can deliver on the world stage".

Hobart 2020 says that with a fan base of more than 12,000 from over 65 countries around the world, the bid committee now hopes other supporters and sponsors will follow as well as the full official backing from the Tasmanian and local governments, and with such great support for the bid, it also opens the door for other major sporting bids such as the Youth Olympics and Commonwealth Games, should the 2020 bid be unsuccessful.
