Chicago May Be Eliminated From Hosting Boxing Championships

The Chicago Tribune reports that Chicago, one of the cities considered to host the 2007 world boxing championships, may be eliminated from the list because the International Olympic Committee (IOC) thinks it could violate the spirit of IOC rules about how bid cites can promote themselves.

The newspaper reports sources saying the IOC ethics commission told the International Boxing Federation there are potential problems with the city hosting the event, although Chicago won’t be an official applicant for the 2016 bid until September 15.

But U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Darryl Seibel said Saturday, “working with USA Boxing, we have not yet decided where this event will take place. There are several United States cities being considered”.

According to rules of conduct for all cities applying for Olympic Games their national Olympic committees have to provide the IOC ethics commission with a list of all international Olympic sports competitions and meetings of IOC-recognized organizations to take place in its territory until the date of the election of the host city. The rules prohibit cities from promoting their bids internationally until they become finalists, then called “candidate cites”. Cities bidding for the 2016 Summer Games have to wait until late 2008 or early 2009. Write or read comments about this article
