Moscow’s mayor Yuri Luzhkov said Thursday that following its failed attempt at hosting the 2012 Summer Games, Moscow will not bid for the 2016 Games.

Luzkhov told the Russian news agency All Sport, “you need to face up to the truth, we have no chance to win the right to host the 2016 Olympics”.

Last August Itar-Tass reported that according to a VCIOM opinion poll 70 per cent of respondents said that Moscow should bid for the 2016 Games

Russia’s Black Sea resort Sochi is one of three cities the International Olympic Committee (IOC) short-listed to host the 2014 Winter Olympic Games.

Luzhkov said the decision to bypass the 2016 Games did not mean Moscow would not consider another bid in the future.

He said, "with Sochi being among the three finalists to host the 2014 Winter Games, to bid again for 2016....is not a good idea. But it doesn't mean that Moscow won't bid again, let's say for the 2020 Summer Games". Write or read comments about this article
