Vancouver 2010 Highway Construction Protesters Could Be Arrested
A B.C. Supreme Court judge granted an enforcement order to help push through the construction of part of the Sea-to-Sky highway expansion for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games - the subject of an environmental protest. For the past four weeks the protesters have set up a blockade at Eagleridge Bluffs in West Vancouver.
The construction company sought and obtained an injunction, ordering members of the Coalition to Save Eagleridge Bluffs to move out.
The order, handed down Wednesday, means the company can now request the assistance of police to remove the protesters if they continue to refuse to leave.
Coalition leader Dennis Perry said he wasn’t surprised but was disappointed with the judge’s decision. He added that no one has any intention of leaving.
He also said that most of the protesters are just “ordinary, average people” who do not want to be arrested. But some of them have indicated that they can’t wait to be arrested.
The coalition wants the provincial government to build a tunnel instead of building the new road through the environmentally sensitive wetland. Write or read comments about this article
