The Friends of the Earth congratulated London on its successful 2012 bid but warns the organizing committee that the Friends of the Earth will be tracking developments to check that progressive standards are set and adhered to for all aspects of the Games.

Jenny Bates, campaign coordinator of the Friends of the Earth said, “the hard work begins now to make the London Olympic Games the ‘Eco Games’ and to ensure they leave a sustainable legacy for East London.

“Friends of the Earth will also be working to help ensure that local concerns are met and that a legacy is left that will improve the quality of life for the people of East London”.

Commenting on London’s successful bid Green Party London Assembly Member Darren Johnson said, “I am still not convinced this is the best use of 2.4 billion pounds worth of public money. However, Greens will now hold their bid team to their pledges to ensure that all the benefits and environmental improvements become reality not rhetoric”.

He said, “it was noticeable that as the deadline neared, environmental considerations got completely jettisoned in Athens in the rush to get the Games ready in time. It would be an outrage if that were to happen in London”.

Green Party Chair Hugo Charlton said, “we must ensure that the Games are characterized by a commitment to sustainable development. That means the legacy would include a sustainable transport system, substantial green space to enhance biodiversity and the involvement of the local community, as well as acting as a catalyst to encourage pole of all ages to become more involved”.
