“One World, One Dream” New Beijing 2008 Slogan – Olympic Village Breaks Ground
Beijing 2008’s new slogan “One World, One Dream” was selected from more than 210,000 entries received from around the world, and was presented at a ceremony Sunday held at the Workers’ Gymnasium in Beijing. It replaces the previous slogan “New Beijing, Great Olympics”.
Liu Qi, President of Beijing 2008 said, “there was no single winner. The slogan embodies the wisdom of hundreds of thousands of people”.
BOCOG had hoped the focus of the new slogan would shift from the city itself to the Olympic Spirit of unity, friendship and progress and traditional Chinese cultural value of harmony and peace. Liu said the new slogan perfectly met their requirements.
“It conveys the noble ideal of people in Beijing as well as in China to share their civilization and create a bright future hand in hand with people from the rest of the world”.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge congratulated BOCOG by letter. He said, “the Olympic Games are unique in their ability to attract the world’s attention, using sport to promote peace and understanding. The IOC is delighted that BOCOG’s slogan for the 2008 Olympic Games has captured that Olympic spirit”.
BOCOG says the new slogan, paired with the seal-like logo, will appear everywhere as part of the Beijing 2008 identity.
Meanwhile the Olympic Village for the 2008 Games broke ground Sunday. It will be home to about 16,000 athletes and sports officials during the Games.
The village is scheduled for completion by the end of 2007 and will be handed over to the Beijing Organizing Committee at the beginning of 2008.
The Olympic Village will also accommodate 7,000 people during the Paralympics.
The village is located in the Olympic Green north of Beijing and consists of a residential area and an international area, covering about 660,000 square metres.
There are 22 six-story buildings and 20 nine-story buildings, a hospital, a library, a track, two gyms, restaurants, swimming pools and tennis courts.
According to BOCOG the apartments will be renovated and sold to the residents after the Paralympic Games are over. Write or read comments about this article
