Flanders Considers 2016 Bid
A Belgium publication reports that Flanders is thinking of bidding for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games, according to Flemish Prime Minister Bart Somers.
The Flemish government has already earmarked a quarter of a million euros for a feasibility study before the bid is decided.
Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent have been named as possible venues, reports Expatica.com, but Somers said the whole region will have to be mobilized.
International Olympic Committee (IOCO) President and fellow Belgian Jacques Rogge welcomed Somers’ idea, but said the Games could only be organized in a big city like Brussels.
Investment in the Games would be substantial since existing sports infrastructure, telecommunications and road networks do not now meet Olympic demands, and athletics stadium, swimming pools and sports halls do not accommodate enough people. Write or read comments about this article
